Subject: 1968 World Series, game 3

DETROIT - In an exciting game, the Detroit Tigers prevailed by the score of
4-2 and took a commanding three games to none lead in the best-of-seven
series.

As has been their pattern, the Tigers struck early against St. Louis.
Starter Nellie Briles gave up singles to Dick McAuliffe and Jim Northrup
leading off the bottom of the first inning. Two outs later, Bill Freehan
doubled them in, and scored himself on Mickey Stanley's base hit.

The Cardinals were able to rebound against Tiger southpaw Mickey Lolich,
scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the deficit to
3-2. St. Louis collected three consecutive singles to open the third
inning, the third of which was off the bat of pitcher Nelson Briles (who
missed a sign instructing him to bunt), delivering an RBI.

But Orlando Cepeda had been thrown out earlier trying to stretch his single
into a double, which helped nip the rally.

In the fourth, Cepeda delivered an RBI single with two outs, but was caught
stealing by catcher Bill Freehan on a botched hit & run attempt with Tim
McCarver at the plate. In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Dick
McAuliffe's grounder through a drawn-in St. Louis infield plated an
insurance run for the home team.

However, the Cardinals were not finished. With reliever Tom Murphy on the
mound for the Tigers to start the ninth inning, St. Louis loaded the bases
with nobody out on a walk to Curt Flood, a single by Mike Shannon, and a
walk to pinch-hitter Dick Schofield. Bullpen ace Hoyt Wilhelm was hurriedly
summoned to put out the fire, and he did: Dal Maxvill attempted to squeeze
home a run, but fouled off two offerings, then tried to surprise the Detroit
defense with a two-strike bunt, but popped out. Rusty Staub then came to
the plate, and grounded sharply to first baseman Norm Cash who turned the
3-6-3 double play, ending the game.

With the Tigers needing only one more victory to clinch the 1968 World
Series, game 4 will likely feature a pitching rematch from game one: Bob
Gibson for St. Louis and Denny McLain for Detroit.
