Browns put up 6 in the 3rd inning against Bosox starter Mel Parnell to take an early lead in the series opener. The resilient Sox keep coming back though, entering the bottom of the 9th down 6-3. Joe Garagiola singles, the pesky Johnny Pesky draws a walk, Bobby Doerr singles, fresh memories of incredible 1950 Browns collapses flood Manager Carr's mind, and Dom Dimaggio hits a ... double play?! Hey, maybe we won't totally fall apart! 6-5 Brownies, two out, Ray Herbert deals and Walt Dropo's routine fly ball is...."drop-oed" by "Mad Men" Dick Whitman! Clyde Vollmer singles and Dropo comes home to tie it 1-17 and the split is...18!!!! Yes, the Browns hold on by a thread for a 6-5 win. Whew! Not as much drama in the second game as St. Louis puts up its customary six runs, and Larry Jansen is stingy, scattering 8 hits and 2 runs in a complete game performance. 6-2 Browns, Ray Coleman goes 4 for 4. Another tight one in the finale, we're tied at 2 after nine innings. Bottom of the 10th, and Boston's Walt Dropo doubles, and is brought home as Dom DiMaggio gets his 4th hit of the night. Boston wins 3-2. Dom goes home to Marilyn Monroe, and is suddenly reminded his is not Joe after all! No more 4 hit nights for you! As an obscure pop culture reference, I have to admit I smile everytime Walt Dropo steps to the plate. One of my favorite shows of all time, Mystery Science Theatre, would show terrible, campy old movies and mock them, including the beloved "Santa Claus vs. the Martians". The zany, comic relief Martian was named Droppo, and I always picture his green skin and nervous facial tics whenever Walt Dropo comes up to bat, and the "Drop 'em Droppo!" catchphrase comes to mind before every swing. But enough about me! Browns happy to have a winning week in 1950, let's hope it's the start of something big.
