Bob Owchinko(8-4) and Bob Welch(0-3) locked horns in a pitcher's duel with
Owchinko and the San Diego Padres coming out on top of the ice-cold Los
Angeles Dodgers 1 to 0.

San Diego scored what proved to be the only run of the contest in the bottom
of the 2nd inning.  That scoring would be all that was needed.  Los Angeles
had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Rich Gossage was credited with his 15th save.  'It's a disheartening loss, no
question about it' said Billy Vanson 'But we have to get over it and get
ready for the next game.'

The Los Angeles Dodgers snapped a 7 game losing streak and defeated the San
Diego Padres by a score of 8 to 5 at Jack Murphy Stadium.

Los Angeles erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
scoring 3 runs on 4 hits.  Lee Lacy led off and started the rally when he
stroked a single.  Buck Martinez was next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.
Davey Lopes then doubled knocking in a run.  After another out, Roger Metzger
came to the plate and tripled plating another run.  Ron Cey came to the plate
and drew a walk.  Steve Garvey added to the outburst and slapped a one-base
hit scoring the final run of the inning.  Both teams finished the game with
12 hits.

Terry Forster(3-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing
no runs. The losing pitcher was Ron Reed(2-2) in relief.

Los Angeles, who had been struggling lately, moved their record to 25-35.
They are now 2-8 in their last ten games.  San Diego will hope that this loss
is only a 'blip' on their recent 8-2 run - and not a start of a new trend.
