The Tigers came so close to a sweep, but settle for a split instead. G1 Allie Reynolds (5 4 4 4 5 6) could not find the plate consistently, and Sid Hudson allowed one run through the first 5 innings to allow the Tigers to build an insurmountable 5-1 lead by the 6th inning. Hoot Evers was the big slugger for Detroit- going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, a home run, and 2 RBI. Gene Goldsberry and Danny O'Connell each added 2 hits to the Tigers' cause. Joe DiMaggio was a one-man wrecking crew for NY as he singled, doubled, and homered in 4 AB to knock in all 4 Yankee runs. Final Score: Detroit 7, New York 4 WP- Hudson 2-7, LP- Reynolds 5-2, SV- Trucks (2) HR- Evers (5), DiMaggio (7) G2 Again Detroit got off to a great
start against Tommy Byrne (4 8 4 4 4 2) by scoring 4 times in the first 2 innings. However, the Yankees owned the middle innings, and held a 6-4 lead in the 9th inning. In the 9th, Evers and PH Stan Lopata walked ahead of a groundball DP by Gene Goldsberry. However, the next batter, Alan Robinson, tattooed Jim Kostanty's fastball for a 2-run HR and send the game to extra innings. In extra innings, Detroit outhit New York 2-to-1, but the 1 Yankee hit proved to be a game-winner when relief pitcher Max Surkont hit a 2-out solo HR to send Yankee fans home ecstatic. It was Surkont's first AB of the season. Final Score: New York 7, Detroit 6, 12 innings WP- Surkont 2-0, LP- Trucks 0-1 HR- Coleman (1), Rizzutto (6), Robinson (4), Surkont (1) G3 For the 3rd game in a row, Detroit's lineup got off to a fast start. The Tigers' 6-run 5th inning chased Whitey
Ford (4 1/3 8 7 6 2 1) and the big hits were delivered by Vic Wertz (RBI double) and Al Clark (3-run HR). In the 9th inning, two Detroit errors allowed the Yankees to pull within 8-6 with they tying runs on base before Tommy Henrich grounded out to end the game. Final Score: Detroit 8, New York 6 WP- Trout 1-3, LP- Ford 4-2 HR- Clark (3), Henrich (2) G4 For the 4th consecutive game, Detroit jumped out to a substantial lead in the early innings by scoring 4 times off of Sal Maglie (6 5 5 5 3 4) in the 2nd inning. For one of the few times this season, Tigers' ace Art Houtterman (8 10 7 6 3 2) wasn't up to the task of making the runs hold up. With Detroit leading 6-4 in the 8th inning, the Yankees came up with the winning rally. (3B1) George Kell booted Bobby Brown's chopper to begin the inning, and that was followed by an RBI triple by Henrich. One out
later, PH Joe Adcock doubled home Henrich, and Hank Bauer singled home PR Bobby Avila for the GW hit. Bud Stewart began the 9th with a single for Detroit, but Kell's groundball DP effectively ended the Tigers' final threat. Final Score: New York 7, Detroit 6 WP- Pillette 1-1, LP- Houtterman 6-5, SV- Ferrick (6) HR- Robinson (5), DiMaggio (8), Henrich (3) Files will follow.. having trouble attaching them again. |
