Giants take all 4 games vs. the Reds.
Reds bats were silent in the series getting shut out twice and scoring 2 runs
in another game. They did plate 5 runs in the 3rd game of
the series with 4 of the 5 coming in a 9th inning rally. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1: Bill Madlock had 3 base hits and Vida Blue shut down the Cincinnati batters on just 3 hits as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 0 at Riverfront Stadium.
Blue(8-8) was very good in the win. He didn't give up much, just 3 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.63 to 3.42. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score.
Milt Wilcox(7-5) took the loss. He gave up 6 hits and no walks in 3 innings. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2: In a close game the San Francisco Giants got by the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings by the score of 4 to 2.
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Finally, San Francisco pulled the game out in the 10th inning. Paul Dade led off and keyed the rally when he smacked a single. Dade took his lead and swiped second. Bill Madlock then drew a walk. Jack Clark stepped in and he banged out a single knocking in a run. Pete Lacock stepped into the box and hit a deep fly scoring the final run of the inning. San Francisco ended up with 11 hits for the game while Cincinnati had 8.
Randy Moffitt(4-3) got the win allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Jim Barr earned his 1st save. Manny Sarmiento(8-5) was the loser in relief. He pitched 2 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits and 1 walk. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3: The San Francisco Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 9 to 5 at Riverfront Stadium.
San Francisco took the lead for good in the top of the 4th inning as they scored 3 runs on 2 base hits. They opened up the lead when they scored 4 unearned runs in the 7th inning. The Reds scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to but it was not enough to overcome the Giants advantage.San Francisco had 7 hits for the night.
Bob Knepper(10-7) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 8 innings. Doc Medich(5-5) ended up with the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 2 hits in 5 innings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4: Jack Clark went yard and had 3 RBI at Riverfront Stadium as the San Francisco Giants beat the reeling Cincinnati Reds 8 to 0.
Clark was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He tripled which scored a run in the 6th inning, doubled in the 8th inning and cracked a two-run shot (his 9th of the season) in the 9th inning. San Francisco had 12 hits for the game and Cincinnati had 5.
The win went to Jim Barr(5-4) who allowed no runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Dave Goltz(9-6) was the loser. The San Francisco ballclub's record now stands at 54-41. With this loss, Cincinnati has a 4-6 record of late, 59-39 overall.
