JULY 22 45,082 fans watched an exciting game at Jack Murphy Stadium. The San Diego Padres topped the Los Angeles Dodgers by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2. San Diego came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing THEIR ONLY2 base hits. Ozzie Smith led off and started the attack as he drew a walk. Fernando Gonzalez stepped into the batter's box and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Gene Richards was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Dave Winfield followed and he ripped a base-knock scoring a run. Winfield stole second with some aggressive base running. Gene Tenace added to the rally and lined a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Los Angeles threatened in the 9th but San Diego was able to put down the rally. Mark Lee(4-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Bobby Castillo(0-4) took the loss in relief. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Billy Vanson 'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'
