Subject: Cubs @ A's

The finale was competitive but the other 3 games were boring, one-sided affairs.  The Cubs did a less-than-great job of distributing the runs, scoring 41 times (!) in our 3 wins; zero in our one loss....

Game 1: Getting more breaks in 9 innings than Cubbie batters generally get in 9 months, Chicago racked up 21 hits, 35 total bases, 10 earned runs and NINE more that weren't in today's 19-5 debacle in which we still outLOBbed the A's by the count of 12-2.  Ellis Kinder was given a 5-run lead and -- even in the midst of a game like this -- blew 100% of it so we had to score 14 more runs just to be sure Kinder wouldn't do it again.

Don Mueller homered twice (and wasn't done yet), Bill Serena had 4 hits and Bob Scheffing 3.

===========================================

Game 2: The breaks were every bit as one-sided today, but in the opposite direction.  Philly only racked up 6 runs but Cliff Chambers allowed almost nothing to the Cubs, and when he did we promptly hit into a double play.  Final score: 6-0.  Five of the 10 hits Minner & Lade permitted went for extra bases, but at least they never walked anybody and the A's could have scored a lot more than 6 even without any additional help.

===========================================

Game 3: Back to game 1 form, amazingly, as the Cubs slammed 4 more home runs and even a schlub like Johnny Schmitz tossed a complete game (and a good one!) which lowered his ERA below 6.0 at last.  Final score: 12-1, with Chicago amassing 12 hits good for 28 total bases.  Bill Nicholson homered in his first 2 at-bats and Scheffing had 2 more hits to maintain his .400 average.

===========================================

Game 4: The see-saw tilted back the other way, with the Cubs blowing a 3-2 lead and trailing 7-3 in the 8th at which point the Philly pen unraveled.  CHN put 8 men on base in the 8th and Mueller, as a pinch hitter, keyed the rally with a 3-run homer.  We tacked on another run in the 9th, which was a good thing because we immediately choked up 2.  Final score: 10-9 on 22 more Cubbie total bases (and 7 walks).

Chicago pitchers were not much less generous than that: ex-Athletic pitcher Hank Wyse tossed one horrible inning, grooving a few pitches for the benefit of his former teammates, but he got the W since it was his game when the 6-run outburst occurred.  Dutch Leonard handled the bottom-of-the-9th choke duties admirably, but Hal White eventually retired the side for his 19th save.
