Now is particularly not the right time to so significantly reduce the inflation factor for players. Please consider the following points: 1) The league is only in the second season of having 22 owned teams out of 26 real teams (85%). The previous 8 seasons had a ratio of 20 owned teams out of 24 real teams (83%). What with the shakeup of the expansion draft, we need a few more seasons of data to see what effect that decrease in extra players will have on the pool of available PAs and IPs. I've noticed that the post-draft Free Agent pool is much smaller now than it was in previous seasons. 2) The 1981 season will be a special case because of the effects of the strike. Some cards will have their playing time skewed. We don't know how that will affect the player pool. 3) Since SMILEY doesn't (and can't due to its contract system) have a 'use him or lose him rule, there will frequently be teams that have a lot of surplus IPs or PAs at a certain position in a season. With the inflation rate reduced, more teams will have shortages at positions that will not be able to be filled with Free Agents. Allowing "unlimited" players to compensate for that would add a new set of problems. There are many unbalanced cards that could produced wildly skewed results. 4) If the desire is to reduce the number of 'Iron Men,' perhaps a better way of doing it would be to have the Injuries option turned on. Injuries would obviously only last until the end of the series being played. Managers would then have to use the depth chart option in their pre-set lineups to account for the possibility of injury. In order to avoid overusage caused by untimely injuries at the end of the season, the option could be turned off the last two or three weeks of the season.
