Game 1 Richie Ashburn had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis NL Cardinals defeated the Boston AL Red Sox 7 to 6 at Sportsman's Park.
St. Louis NL came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 2 runs on 3 base hits. Bobby Morgan led off and started the rally when he drew a walk. Johnny Klippstein got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Ashburn then tripled. Johnny Lipon followed next and he worked the squeeze play to perfection. Enos Slaughter came up to bat and stroked a single. Stan Musial contributed to the rally and doubled. Boston AL tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
The victory was credited to Klippstein (4-2) who went 3 innings, allowing 1 run. Willie Ramsdell (13-8) ended up with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 14 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings. Game 2 Stan Musial hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI at Sportsman's Park where the St. Louis NL Cardinals beat the Boston AL Red Sox 11 to 3.
Boston AL fell behind quickly as the St. Louis NL offense came through in the first inning plating an isolated run. St. Louis NL totaled 13 hits on the night.
Alex Kellner (11-13) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. The losing pitcher was Willard Nixon (4-4). He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 5 innings. Game 3 Mel Parnell threw a complete game shutout at Sportsman's Park as the Boston AL Red Sox beat the St. Louis NL Cardinals by the count of 3 to 0.
Parnell (17-14) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much, just 7 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Both teams totaled 7 hits on the night.
Howie Pollet (11-17) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings. Game 4 The St. Louis NL Cardinals and the Boston AL Red Sox locked up in an exciting one-run game at Sportsman's Park. The final score was the St. Louis NL Cardinals 3, the Boston AL Red Sox 2 in 10 innings.
The score was tied at 2 after nine. St. Louis NL came out on top in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Johnny Berardino drew a walk. One out later, Richie Ashburn came to the plate and lined a base-hit. Johnny Lipon then doubled giving St. Louis NL the win as 16,251 happy fans joyfully celebrated. St. Louis NL had only 6 hits for the game.
George Munger (5-6) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Mickey Harris (5-8) was tagged with the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk.
