Subject: Reds @ Cardinals
The Reds make a last-ditch effort to stay in the pennant race, winning the final 3 games once the offense decided to show up.... Game 1: Bob Forsch & Rollie Fingers limit the Reds to 3 hits, while Paul Moskau takes the complete-game 3-0 loss. The winning rally was keyed by a couple of stolen bases, a sac bunt, and a groundout. Game 2: On the verge of yet another close defeat, the Reds eventually got to Pete Vuckovich and several relievers by way of a 6-run seventh and held on to win 9-5. Cincy collected 3 doubles and a bases-loaded walk in the big inning. Game 3: Who else but the Reds could build a lead of ten runs yet not reasonably expect to actually win the game? Up 12-1 in the middle innings, the Reds emptied the bench while the Cards were busy cruising along with as many errors as hits (5). Then in SLN's eighth, thanks to two errors which led to 6 unearned runs, the score suddenly became 12-11. After allowing a 3-run homer to the first batter he faced, Dave Frost restored order and was awarded a "save" for his effort. The Reds made the last two games of this series slightly more difficult than they needed to be (and not just with all that "clutch" pitching & defense) by outstranding St. Louis 25-10. Game 4: The Reds took a pair of leads, blew them both, and went into the ninth tied at 3. SLN reliever Joaquin Andujar was literally unhittable for a while, but not always in a good way. The Cincy ninth began with K, walk, walk, walk, walk, K. With the winning run having already scored on the 4th BB of the inning, Andujar finally threw one near the plate and Pete Rose decided to cover the point spread with a Grand Slam. Final score: 8-3.
