Subject: Reds @ Braves
Although our "luck" at home has turned especially ugly lately for some reason, the Reds remain able to eke out a win or two when HAL manages our opponents.... Game 1: Tom Hume and Phil Niekro both took shutouts past the halfway point, George Foster's solo home run finally putting something on the scoreboard in the sixth. Joe Morgan's triple and Cesar Geronimo's 2-run homer gave the Reds some insurance in the ninth, which became critical since we (naturally) gave back 2 of those 3 runs just a few batters later. Manny Sarmiento got the final two outs and Cincy held on for a 4-2 victory. Game 2: Thanks to some automatic BP homers and two costly blown x-plays by the Reds, Joe Niekro took a 4-2 lead into the late innings, but Cincinnati stormed back with 6 runs in the final two innings to prevail by the score of 8-5. The damage might have been much worse on both sides, but the teams combined to hit into 6 GIDPs in the game. Game 3: Atlanta's hits were primarily homers, while the Reds were content to play "little ball" and dominate the LOB column (12-4) and therefore lost by the score of 5-1. Jeff Burroughs led the way with 2 round-trippers, while Matthews & Murphy notched one apiece. Doyle Alexander tossed 6.1 wobbly innings (12 baserunners, 1 run) and Dave Campbell allowed no hits in 2.2 innings to earn the save. Game 4: Dave Goltz needed no bullpen help, scattering 4 hits on the way to a 6-3 win in the series finale.
