AUGUST 23 In an exciting finish the San Francisco Giants pulled out a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 4 to 3 at Candlestick Park. San Francisco won the game with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Bill Madlock slapped a single. Rob Andrews followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Jack Clark then doubled giving San Francisco the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Los Angeles was out-hit by San Francisco, 11 hits to 6. Nelson Briles(1-1) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Bobby Castillo(0-7) was the loser in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning giving up 2 hits and no walks. Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings. San Francisco came out on top in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Willie McCovey providing the offense himself as he belted a solo home run (his 6th of the season) resulting in an exciting win for San Francisco and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Despite losing, Los Angeles out-hit San Francisco 8 to 5. The winning pitcher was Dale Murray(3-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Terry Forster(6-5) took the loss in relief. The San Francisco ballclub's record now stands at 74-67. Los Angeles can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks. San Francisco came up with 3 runs in the 5th inning when they had 4 base hits. After an out was recorded, Rich Chiles kicked off the action when he lined a base-hit. Rob Andrews followed and he lined a single. Jack Clark then singled to load the bases. Bergman was up next and he stroked a single knocking home two runners. Bergman took second on the throw. Willie McCovey stepped into the box and was walked intentionally to load the bases. Darrell Evans joined his teammates in the uprising and drew a walk scoring the final run of the inning.
