Game 1 Joe Dobson whitewashed Cincinnati as the Boston AL Red Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 2 to 0 at Crosley Field.
Dobson (2-1) was in control of the game from the outset. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.86 to 2.70. Boston AL had only 4 hits for the game.
The loss was charged to Howie Fox (3-1). He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work. Game 2 The Cincinnati Reds got by the Boston AL Red Sox at Crosley Field. The final score was 4 to 2.
Cincinnati jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring a single run. Snuffy Stirnweiss drew a walk. After an out was recorded, Duke Snider came to bat and doubled. Danny Litwhiler then would ground out. Boston AL had 10 hits in the game while Cincinnati had 7, but Cincinnati had the more timely hits.
The victory went to Sheldon Jones (1-1) who went 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Ewell Blackwell earned his 2nd save. Mickey Harris (2-1) was tagged with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
With the win Cincinnati now has a record of 7-9. Boston AL continued their losing ways and their record is now 9-7. They are 1-9 in their last ten games. Game 3 Catcher Les Moss had 2 base hits as the Cincinnati Reds bested the Boston AL Red Sox 3 to 1 at Crosley Field.
Cincinnati jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning plating one base runner. Cincinnati had only 5 hits for the night.
Ken Raffensberger (2-3) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Ewell Blackwell recorded the save, his 3rd. The loss was charged to Blix Donnelly (0-2). Game 4 Paul Lehner had 2 base hits as the Boston AL Red Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 5 to 3 at Crosley Field.
Mel Parnell (2-2) was solid if not spectacular. He went 6 innings allowing 8 hits and 3 walks. Boston AL banged out 10 hits on the night.
Erv Palica recorded the save, his 2nd. Harry Gumbert (0-1) took the loss in relief. 'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Parnell, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
