Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals

The Cubs split a road series!!!!  (That any other team would probably have swept....)

Game 1: A matchup of weak starting pitchers resulted in a pitchers duel (11 combined IP, 2 runs) however neither Bob Rush nor Lou Brissie were around at the end.  The teams alternated scoring runs, with the Cubs blowing the lead twice and the Cardinals proving to be poor sports by skipping our turn just when it mattered the most.  Cubs lose 3-2 in 10 innings.  Dick Weik pitched well in middle relief but blew the save and then Dutch Leonard took the mound in the 10th and left it when the game was over, having retired nobody.

===============================

Game 2: Another fine day for starting pitchers (11.1 combined IP, 0 runs) as our one effective starter, Ted Gray, lowered his 1949 ERA to 2.90 and still has managed to avoid winning even once.  That's the Cubs for you.  After Gray's exit the Cubs did manage to score twice, but Monk Dubiel erased that lead immediately in the 8th and Doyle Lade choked up the losing run in the 9th.  Cubs lose 3-2 again.

===============================

Game 3: HAL finally removed his boot from our throats but even a 6-run lead became tenuous because Ellis Kinder was on the mound.  Fortunately we got him OFF the mound and Leonard registered save #1 in our 7-4 win.  Andy Pafko had 2 hits including a home run, and perhaps will finally emerge from his season of massive underachievement.  And bring about 18 of his teammates out of that hole with him.

===============================

Game 4: Now here's a real fair fight: a starting pitcher who allows barely 1 run per game (SLN's Harry Brecheen) vs. one who allows 1 run per INNING (CHN's Gene Bearden).

Amazingly the Cubs broke on top with a pair of runs in the second, but Brecheen was not to blame -- aside from the error he committed.  Brecheen atoned by singling to open the bottom of the inning and before much longer our 2-0 lead was a 4-2 deficit.

Marty Marion missed a home run earlier (our split cards at the plate generally average about 17.2) but he got one in the 7th against his real-life team which cut the gap to one.  The end came in shocking fashion in the 8th when Brecheen drilled Bill Nicholson with a pitch with 2 outs and the bases empty.  Fleet-footed (?) catcher Bob Scheffing tripled Nicholson home and Marion followed with a clutch single for a 5-4 lead.

Lade plunked Del Rice 2 batters into the SLN 8th as revenge for Nicholson, but he escaped that jam and a similar one in the 9th and earned the victory (3 IP, 1 hit).

Alan
