Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers

The Cubs have far more talent than our luckless winning percentage indicates, and a tiny amount of that talent is finally beginning to show -- but only on the road.  The next break we get in a home game will be our first....

Game 1: Despite being outhit 10-7 the Cubs managed more total bases -- and more LOB -- than the Dodgers but naturally couldn't purchase a clutch hit at any price.  Final score: 4-1.  Although the overall stats were just about even, the only thing which kept the score remotely close was 4 CS by Brooklyn and they had a runner picked off too.  They ran wild the rest of the series to make up for it.

Game 2: Despite outhitting the Dodgers by a whopping 11-5 count the contest was in doubt the entire way but the Cubbies somehow prevailed by the count of 5-4.  BRN starter Rex Barney is supposed to be tough to hit, but he wasn't, and CHN starter Johnny Schmitz is normally a hit machine but today he wasn't.  Bill Nicholson homered for the Cubs and the boxscore shows that he and CHN infielder Frankie Gustine are now hitting a combined .230 -- that's .117 for Gustine and .113 for Nicholson.  Massive underachievers 'R' us.

Game 3: Ted Gray had a rare terrible start, getting off on the wrong foot by allow a gopher right at the split-card limit in the first inning.  HAL decided that the Cubs weren't grounding into enough DPs so he had us LINE into a pair of costly rally-killers.  And costly they were.  Final score: 5-3.

Game 4: Due to a managerial error (the Cubs are underachieving in every possible way) Ellis Kinder came back on just 2 days' rest in order to help the Dodgers win some more.  But Kinder had a rare competent start and we got some even rarer surgery in our favor when 6 straight batters reached base to open the 7th.  Cubs win, 6-2.  With 2 outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the 9th the Cubs just *had* to get the tying run to the plate but, amazingly, that's where it ended.  Nicholson's record-setting year continues, down to .102 now.

Alan
