Subject: Cubs @ Giants

As the Cubs still patiently await Break Number One of 1949 in a home game, we continue to show slight improvement on the road, though we nearly lost a game in which we got 20 hits, and DID lose a game in which a CHN pitcher almost tossed a no-hitter....

Game 1: Chicago outfielders committed 3 (of our 4) errors, including TWO on sac flies that didn't even have a throw, and the Giants were getting 100% of the other breaks as well and had a 6-2 lead entering the 9th.  Loading the bases with 0 or 1 out and then never scoring was our trademark for the entire series, and although Emil Verban's single narrowed the margin to 6-3, he left the bases loaded with just one out remaining.

But Hank Sauer came through big with the only kind of homer we can get -- a 1-20 BPHR that requires no split card! -- and his Grand Slam gave us a shocking 7-6 lead.  For the moment.

With the Giants down to *their* last out, the CHN outfield came up with its final unearned gaffe of the day and the score was tied.  But Marty Marion's automatic BPHR in the 10th gave us a 9-7 win even though we choked up yet another error in the bottom of the inning which brought the losing run to the plate.

========================================

Game 2: The Cubs racked up 20 hits today but trailed from the first inning through the sixth as HAL mercilessly and surgically hammered Bob Rush's loaded 5 column on behalf of the home team.  However, after 2 K's opened the CHN 7th, 6 straight batters reached base and 5 scored.

But NYN got 2 runs with zero hits in the 8th (walk, walk, HBP, walk, error) and got the tying run to the plate in the 9th.  With 20 hits, the Cubs barely eke out a 9-7 win.  Marion went 5 for 5 with 2 doubles to go along with his 4 2 3 3 line from game 1, though he would take an 0-fer in the finale.

========================================

Game 3: Luckless Ted Gray did it again today -- excellent performance, not a damn thing to show for it.  Gray took a no-hitter into the 8th inning but of course that meant the Cubs had to be scoreless too.

A leadoff single by the Giants in the 8th looked as if it would be harmless when the next 2 batters made outs, but pinch hitter Johnny Mize came up with the two-out clutch single and Gray settled for a 2-hitter and yet another close loss.  Final score: 1-0.

Herm Wehmeier tossed 8 shutout innings for the Giants (5 hits, 4 walks), aided by the fact that the Cubs wouldn't know a clutch hit if it bit them in the ass.

Alan
