Subject: SMILEY - WEEK ONE - ST. LOUIS @ CHICAGO
OBSERVATIONS FROM ST. LOUIS: Very fine pitchers series - Game One Free agent acquisition Jerry Koosman pitched a 3 hitter in 7 innings of work and turned it over to Bruce Sutter, who looked impressive earing his first save of the season. Game Two saw Rick Reuschel and Bob Forsch locked in a pitcher's duel. Forsch took a no hitter into the 6th, when Pepe Frias singled sharply to right. After a walk and a wild pitch in the 9th by Tippy Martinez, Garry Thomasson singled to right driving in George Hendrick for the lone run of the game. Dick Tidrow came in with one out in the 9th, to notch his first save of the year. Game Three was another close game, in which the Cubs won 4-3. Lamp looked a little shaky in the beginning, and Joaquin didn't have his bet stuff at all. Bruce Sutter pitched well in relief to notch his 2nd save of the year. Ted Simmons and George Hendrick combine to go 0-21 in the series, and the Cardinals score 5 runs, with 18 hits in the series. The bats better wake up - or this is going to be a long campaign. GAME ONE: Jerry Koosman came through with a solid 7 innings and Bobby Bonds jacked one out of the ballyard as the Chicago NL Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 3 to 1 at Wrigley Field.Koosman(1-0) was in control of the game from the outset. He gave up just 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.Chicago NL had 11 hits overall, while St.Louis had 5. Bruce Sutter earned his 1st save. Pete Vuckovich(0-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 10 hits and no walks in 6 innings. GAME TWO: Bob Forsch took a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Wrigley Field as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago NL Cubs by the count of 1 to 0. St. Louis won the game with a run in the top of the 9th inning. After two outs George Hendrick drew a walk. Tippy Martinez then unleashed a wild
pitch. Gary Thomasson then laced a single scoring the run. St. Louis finished with just 4 hits in the victory. The victory was credited to Forsch(1-0) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing no runs. The right-handed Forsch had his no-hit bid broken up by Pepe Frias who singled with one out in the 6th inning. Dick Tidrow recorded his 1st save. Martinez(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. GAME THREE: One run was the difference at Wrigley Field as the Chicago NL Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4 to 3. St. Louis never recovered after Chicago NL took the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. Bobby Bonds drew a walk. Bonds was running on the next pitch and he stole second. Jerry Martin thenlined a one-base hit. Bill Buckner stepped in and he stroked a base-hit scoring the
run. St. Louis threatened in the 9th but Chicago NL was able to put down the rally. Tippy Martinez(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 1/3 innings. Bruce Sutter gained credit for his 2nd save. The loss was charged
to Joaquin Andujar(0-1). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings. Alan Bosslet was in a talkative mood in the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we
could win all of the close ones - wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor this one for a little while.'
