Subject: SMILEY - WEEK TWO OBSERVATIONS
OBSERVATIONS FROM MONTREAL (WEEK TWO): A series split, in which the bullpen blew a great pitching performance by Bob Forsch in game one. The bats came out in games two and three, and Pete Vukovich got hammered in game 4. Hitting stars of the week - Carney Lansford and Ted Simmons - pitching stars - Bob Forsch and Jack Billingham. APRIL 12, 1979 Ivan Dejesus hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 6 to 2 at Olympic Stadium. Dejesus enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He tripled in the 1st inning and rifled a three-run blast (his 3rd of the season) in the 7th inning. Montreal
finished with 9 hits in the victory. Steve Rogers(3-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing
2 runs. Roy Thomas(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 4 runs in 1/3 of an inning and saw his ERA jump from 3.00 to 7.11.
APRIL 13, 1979 The St. Louis Cardinals had an easy time of it at Olympic Stadium defeating the Montreal Expos by a score of 7 to 2. St. Louis jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. St. Louis finished with 15 hits while Montreal ended up with 6. The victory went to Jack Billingham(2-0) who went 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs. Scott Sanderson (1-2) took the loss. He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 11 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
APRIL 14, 1979 Catcher Ted Simmons jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Montreal Expos in 10 innings by a score of 7 to 6 at Olympic Stadium. Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. St. Louis won the game in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Gary Thomasson drew a walk. John Ellis followed and he laced a single. Ken Oberkfell then delivered a base-hit to load the bases. Jerry Mumphrey stepped in and he drew a walk scoring the run. St. Louis had a total of 13 hits for the game. Mark Littell(1-1) went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Rollie Fingers earned the save, his 1st. Woodie Fryman(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.
APRIL 15, 1979 David Palmer whiffed 11 batters at Olympic Stadium as the Montreal Expos embarrassed the St. Louis Cardinals by the lopsided score of 12 to 2. Palmer(1-0) put on a good performance. He allowed just 8 hits and no walks in
9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.00. Montreal finished with 17 hits in the victory. Pete Vuckovich(1-2) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 10 hits and 3 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings. Palmer was pleased with his performance. He
noted, 'I had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on. The fans really got into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can only do that again in my next outing.'
