Subject: Reds @ Giants

The Reds continue to score and allow boatloads of runs, aided in the latter category by a defense that makes the Toronto Blue Jays look like the 1968 Cardinals (our strategy of playing 2 4s and a 5 in the OF apparently isn't working as well as expected).

More good news for the rest of the league: the Cincy bullpen is back to normal, although Tom Hume, alone among the arsonists, hasn't yet been infected with whatever disease lurks out there year after year....

Game 1: This game was scoreless into the fifth, due mainly to the Cincinnati penchant for massive LOB "advantages" (14-3 today).  Finally, three of the first 4 batters in the CIN fifth homered and after allowing 3 more hits, Vida Blue was sent to the showers.  Dave Goltz then managed to hold on for the 8-4 win, with a lot of help from Tom Hume (2.2 perfect IP).

Game 2: Lynn McGlothen allowed 4 hits and 1 run over 8 innings and the Giants capitalized on some typically-poor Cincy defense to win a rare low-scoring contest by the score of 3-1.

Game 3: The second 3-run lead of the day that was blown by the visitors came after 25 outs were in the books, nobody was on base, and was a result of a couple of Mark Clear walks, a single, and a pinch-hit game-ending homer on a roll of 2-12 by Dennis Littlejohn, who was the first (and last) batter faced by Joe Sambito.  Final score: 8-7.

Game 4: Tom Seaver allowed 5 runs (a grand total of 1 being earned) and blew a 4-2 lead in the SFN seventh when Willie McCovey came up with a two-out, 3-run pinch-homer on a roll where there was a 90% chance of ending the inning.  Tom Hume got the final out in the seventh and also pitched a scoreless eighth.

Losing 5-4 in the ninth, and with the Cincinnati manager in the midst of another choking spell in the dugout, Hume waved off a pinch-hitter and promptly doubled to open the frame.  This development so rattled Gary Lavelle that he allowed 3 more singles, a wild pitch, and a double.  A few batters later, Hume delivered another hit then eventually retired the Giants in the bottom of the ninth after a small amount of trouble, capping the 10-5 comeback.

Alan
