may 26 The New York AL Yankees nipped the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 3 at Forbes Field in a hard fought contest. In the top of the 2nd inning New York AL scored 2 runs with the help of 3 hits. Charley Smith led off and he laced a base-knock. Elston Howard was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Joe Pepitone then stroked a one-base hit. Clete Boyer came up and he banged out a single to load the bases. Al Downing got his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Bobby Richardson added to the outburst and reached on an error plating two runs. Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. The winning pitcher was Downing(1-6) who allowed 3 runs in 6 innings. Steve Hamilton recorded his 1st save. Dennis Ribant(4-4) was the loser.
