Game 1 Ellis Valentine cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the Chicago NL Cubs by a score of 9 to 2.
Valentine provided much of the offense. He smashed a two-run homer (his 6th of the season) in the 1st inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 3rd inning and laced a base-hit in the 7th inning. Offensively, Montreal was a juggernaut. They scored in 6 separate innings.
The winning pitcher was Dickie Noles (1-0) who allowed 1 run in 5 and 2/3 innings. The losing pitcher was Jerry Koosman (2-6). He gave up 5 runs and 7 hits in 6 innings.
Game 2 One run was the difference at Wrigley Field as the Chicago NL Cubs defeated the Montreal Expos in 11 innings 5 to 4.
Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Chicago NL ended up winning it in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Jerry Martin doubled. Sal Bando came next and he ripped a base-knock making Chicago NL the winners and sending the 37,538 fans home happy. Although they lost, Montreal did out-hit Chicago NL 10 to 7.
The win was credited to Tippy Martinez (2-3) who went 4 innings allowing no runs. The loss was charged to Sid Monge (1-1) in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.
With this win, Chicago NL has a 15-22 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss, Montreal has a record of 5-5 lately, 23-14 overall.
Game 3 Dennis Lamp had 2 base hits as the Chicago NL Cubs outscored the Montreal Expos 3 to 0.
Chicago NL had 2 runs cross the plate in the 6th inning when they had 3 base hits. The big moment was provided by Jerry Martin who made the crowd come alive when he doubled which was good for two runs. Chicago NL had a total of 7 hits for the game.
Lamp (3-4) allowed no runs in 8 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Bruce Sutter gained credit for his 8th save. Scott Sanderson (4-3) was the loser. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Game 4 Jerry Martin rocketed 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Chicago NL Cubs topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 7 to 4 at Wrigley Field.
Martin had a great day at the plate. He belted a three-run homer in the 1st inning and smacked a three-run homer (his 6th of the season) in the 6th inning. Although they lost, Montreal did out-hit Chicago NL 12 to 6.
The winning pitcher was Bill Bonham (3-3) who allowed 1 run in 7 innings. Bruce Sutter earned his 9th save. Ed Whitson (4-3) took the loss. He allowed Chicago NL 6 runs in 5 innings of work. |
