Subject: Re: [SmileyList] 69 scheduling...
Mike, Here is my assessment of the schedule you are trying to create: Let's define a couple of terms to be sure we are on the same page. A "set" is two teams facing each other. Doesn't matter if it is home/away or for how many games. "Interdivisional" games are games played by teams in different divisions, while "divisional" games are played by teams within their own division (this might not be obvious to everyone reading this). The schedule you are trying to create requires 52 sets within the division (4 teams x 13 sets), and 10 sets interdivision. This is a 5.2 to 1 ratio of sets. On any given week, you can only have 4 divisional sets and 1 interdivisional set. This is a 4 to 1 ratio. It makes sense then, that you will run out of interdivisional games before you can complete all of your divisional games. In other words, you cannot complete the schedule you suggest within 23 weeks without having teams taking a bye because of the odd number of teams in each division (while four teams play divisional games, one team sits). It follows that after 20 weeks, you will have teams sitting...just as you described in your mail. While there may be several ways to solve this problem, I believe the odd number of teams makes byes inevitable unless you play a balanced schedule within each league. So, I offer two solutions: 1) Each team plays 3 sets of games against each team within its division (4 teams x 3 sets = 12 weeks, both home and away). Each team also plays 2 sets of games against teams in the other division (5 teams x 2 sets = 10 weeks). Each team will have to have 3 byes ( 1 bye for every five weeks of divisional games). Total weeks to play a season is 25 weeks if no weeks are skipped. Notes: Three games series with this schedule are pretty much out the door. Since you have to play each team in your division 23 times in 6 sets (3 sets home/3 sets away), it is obvious you have can have only a single 3 game set against each team in your division. This schedule also requires that you play interdivisional sets on the same week. If you want 4 sets against any team then you have to lengthen the schedule by a like number of weeks (Mike, I see by the schedule that you proposed in your mail that a 4th set was required against at least one team. This could only be done by adding an extra week to the season). 2) Each team plays all teams in the LEAGUE an equal 18 games. This requires 9 teams x 3 sets = 27 weeks. I know we voted on the balanced schedule, but I offer this alternative anyways to give some perspective. To shorten the first scenario to anything less than 25 weeks would require playing more than 4 games a week by one manager. I believe you can manipulate the number of games in any given set to get your home and away games to come out right. I hope I have laid this out in a clear, understandable way. I will be happy to field questions and/or consider options that I may have missed... Steve
