Subject: [PreSmiley] 1949 World Series, game 7

Game autoplayed at league HQ by owner agreement.

Mel Parnell and Al Brazle matched up for the third time in the series; it wasn't quite the slugfest that we saw in game 1 and it certainly wasn't the pitching duel from game 4.

Eddie Robinson's 2-out single in the first plated Reese and Brooklyn jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead.

Boston took over from there, tallying 4 times on 5 consecutive 2-out singles in the bottom of the frame and another run in the second on 3 consecutive singles.

Parnell was tough after that, as the Dodgers put up goose eggs in the 2nd through the 6th -- but Brazle hung around and was just as tough, albeit still facing a 4-run deficit.

The Dodgers comeback began innocently in the 7th when BOA right fielder Tommy O'Brien threw the ball into the seats trying to gun down Reese at third on Floyd Baker's 1-out single.  Reese scored but Parnell retired the Robinson brothers with Baker being left at third.

Tommy Brown's 2-out single in the BRN 8th chased Furillo home and ended Parnell's day with the score still 5-3 in his favor.

Enter Erv Palica, who finished off the inning uneventfully.  Palica hit for himself in Boston's scoreless 8th and took the mound to seal up the Boston victory and go down in history.

He did that, all right -- think "Donnie Moore"....

Baker opened the inning with a walk, and Eddie R. got a free pass after Jackie fouled out.  Palica fanned Furillo on 4 pitches to bring Boston to within one out of the championship.

At which point Roy Campanella lofted Palica's second pitch over the Green Monster and the Dodgers were on top by the count of 6-5.

The parallels with the 1986 ALCS game 5 didn't end there: the home team may have been down by a run, but the contest wasn't ready to end just yet.

Preacher Roe retired the first 2 batters and then found considerable trouble with the Sox down to *their* final out.  Ted Williams was hit by a pitch, singled to second by Doerr and raced home on Birdie Tebbett's bloop single to center.  Frank Papish took over for Roe and narrowly escaped defeat when Eddie R. stabbed Putsy Caballero's liner to end the inning.

But in the 10th Palica was no less shaky than he had been a few minutes earlier: Diering doubled, Hermanski walked and Boston summoned Carl Erskine to face Pee Wee.  Reese bunted the runners up a base, Baker singled one home and Eddie Robinson plated 2 with a double.  A Furillo sac fly ended the scoring with Brooklyn up by 4.

Papish induced 3 groundouts in the bottom of the 10th, and the Brooklyn Dodgers became the 1949 World Champs!

Stats and boxscores should be posted later today.

Alan
