Subject: Opening Day report from Ebbets Field

The Cubs enter 1948 with the as much pitching talent as any team in the majors.  Yes, really.  Led by lefty starters Johnny Schmitz and Gene Bearden and ace reliever Jess Dobernic, and aided by gold-glover Marty Marion and the fact that the wind will be blowing *in* all year at Wrigley Field, if things go as they should CHN has a chance to allow the fewest runs in the league.

We opened the 1948 season in Brooklyn, overflowing with hope that the luckless campaigns of recent seasons are behind us.

Let's see  how long it took for that 'hope' to be utterly demolished....

============================================

Two durable starters, Murry Dickson and Robin Roberts, took the mound for the opener and stayed quite a while as they combined for 17 IP.

Chicago broke on top in the 3rd when Andy Pafko delivered an RBI single with 2 outs and Les Moss followed with our first home run of the year.  The next inning saw the first of three CHN baserunners eliminated via surgical split cards and other means, but surely that wouldn't become important.

Our lead went to 4-0 in the 5th when Pafko's solo blast left the yard, but a 2-out $ single favored the Dodgers and ignited a rally in the bottom of the frame.  Surely that tiny morsel of misfortune wouldn't matter.

The Cubs tacked on an insurance run in the 9th on Eddie Waitkus's sac fly and took a lead that would be 98% safe for any other team (3 runs) to the bottom of the 9th.

BRN has been known for their hitting for many seasons, but they weren't getting much today so HAL resorted to other means.  Johnny Berardino led off with a four-pitch walk; a pinch-hitter was next and Dickson got tough -- it took 6 pitches to complete that free pass and the tying run came to the plate.

But not to face Dickson; Dobernic strode confidently to the mound... and donated another walk.  Why swing the bat?

Then Dobernic showed that he is capable of temporary success as well as inevitable failure.  It's an easy guess as to which one we'll see more of this year.

With the bases loaded and 0 outs, Brooklyn still felt no need to swing.  Dobernic needed 3 pitches to strike out Marv Rackley.  And just 3 more to fan Jackie Robinson!  One out to go and still a 3-run lead!

Now it's 'inevitable' time.  Three more pitches resulted in a hit which plated 2 and cut the lead to 5-4.  Moments later Ace Reliever Dobernic got that ever-elusive third out -- but not before allowing one more hit that tied the contest.

The Cubs had runner #3 gunned down on the bases in the top of the 10th, and the Dodgers immediately followed with -- of course -- a 2-out single from another successful pinch-hitter that made the final score 6-5 and completed the first of dozens of absolutely incredible chokes to come for CHN again this season.

Chicago outhit Brooklyn 12-11, out-total-based them 18-13 and didn't make any errors.  But 'oh, those bases on balls': 7 altogether, just 3 in the first 7 frames but 4 more when it counted the most.

Alan
