Subject: Cubs @ Dodgers
The Cubs continue to defy statistical probability, and (with one minor exception) in every case it is to our great misfortune. The exception was, over the course of the series, the Feeble Cubs offense having as many total bases as the Mighty Dodgers. Didn't make much difference on the scoreboard though.... Game 2: BRN's Rex Barney has an excellent card, so HAL had the CHN batters roll on it an astounding 23 times in 31 chances (74%). We surgically avoided what few hits (and plentiful walks) there are, getting just 5 hits all day and erasing 2 of those with timely GIDPs. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first when we sacrificed a trailing baserunner to get a run but Brooklyn tied it in the 3rd and got some surgery in the 6th. All 3 BRN runs scored with -- of course -- 2 outs in the inning. Final score: 3-1. ========================================== Game 3: The broken record plays on. We got just 4 hits all day and erased 2 of those with timely GIDPs. The Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the second when we sacrificed a trailing baserunner to get a run. When a gb(B) would be more damaging than a gb(A) -- like with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs -- we found that too. Peanuts Lowrey had a 1-6 chance at a Grand Slam in the first; got a 7. Brooklyn's Don Lund had a 2-run HR 1-2, fb(B) 3-20 chance in the second; got the 2. The outcome of the game was slightly affected. Final score: 3-1. ========================================== Game 4: CHN's Gene Bearden has an excellent card except for some minor damage in the 4 column, so like a laser beam HAL zeroed in on the weak spots: BRN nailed Bearden's 4-column *12* times. Bearden was in grave condition after all that surgery and wound up with an 8 inning start that featured SEVENTEEN baserunners and 7 runs. The really amazing part was that the Cubbie offense treated Curt Simmons and his mediocre card just as badly and then tacked on 5 insurance runs in the 9th against Russ Christopher. After yet another patented bottom-of-the-9th hemorrhage (3 runs, just like game 1), it turned out we needed that insurance. Final score: 13-8. Bearden didn't quite die on the operating table and got the W! The ugly contest consisted of 2 more rally-killing Cubbie GIDPs, and the teams combined for 25 hits, 42 total bases and 16 free passes. So much for the Cubs having a chance at allowing the fewest runs in the league; talent means little when faced with this sort of luck. Alan |
