Subject: Cubs @ Braves

The Cubs continue to tread water and fail to take advantage of numerous opportunities.  Our specialty this series (aside from critical sabotage defense) was hitting several automatic ball park homers -- of course they were automatic OUTS....

Game 1: The Cubs' top-flight defense was hammered mercilessly by HAL today, blown x's all over the place, and they were tremendously costly.  The Cubs took a quick 2-0 lead against Johnny Sain, but Ellis Kinder (aided by immediate sabotage) just as quickly gave those runs back.  So we took the lead again -- and the defense gave it right back again.  The final straw came in the BON 7th when Wally Westlake delivered the game-losing 2-run homer.  Final score: 5-3 on 2 unearned runs.  Neither team drew a walk in the contest, and the Cubs LOBbed away our advantages in hits and total bases and took yet another undeserved loss.

=========================================

Game 2: Johnny Schmitz is the quintessential Cubbie: he has made 5 starts with just about the best card of any starting pitcher anywhere, has allowed just 7.3 hits/9 IP (which is actually MORE than he should permit), just one home run, and Schmitz sports a nice 2.19 ERA.

His record is 0-4.

Today Schmitz went 9 strong innings, scattering just 5 singles and no extra-base hits (but 6 walks, as he continues to be unaccountably wild at all times) and one run, and *still* couldn't buy a win.  But for the first time in 1948 at least his team won a game Schmitz started and we balanced the books from game 1 by winning on an unearned run.  Final score: 2-1 in 12 innings.  Ted Gray got the W via 3 innings of perfect relief -- are you paying attention, Ace Closer Jess Dobernic?

=========================================

Game 3: He wasn't.  Luckless Gene Bearden -- he's like Johnny Schmitz, with the great card but lousy stats instead of great ones -- was raked over the coals again (6.1 IP, 10 hits, 3 runs) though Bearden did take a 3-0 lead into the 7th before HAL realized who was on the mound.  Bearden left with the score 3-2 and Dobernic needed just one batter to erase the lead.

Not satisfied with merely inflating Bearden's ERA, Dobernic choked up a pair of runs of his own on Frank McCormick's 2-run, 2-out gopher in the 8th.  Amazingly, the Cubs, down to our final out in the 9th with the tying runs on base, brought those runs home when Peanuts Lowrey singled!  Pafko homered in the 10th and we almost got back to where we were before Bearden & Dobernic unraveled.  Final score: 7-5 in 10.  Ralph Hamner pitched the way a reliever is supposed to, and earned his first victory in the majors.

=========================================

Game 4: Back to typical Cubbie luck.  CHN should have had a field day against junkman Fred G. Sanford.

So naturally Sanford went 8.2 innings and allowed just 1 earned run despite FOURTEEN baserunners as the Cubs racked up a disastrous 10-4 'advantage' in LOB.  The 'field day' was celebrated by the Boston batters, who pounded Murry Dickson for 10 hits and 8 runs.  Final score: 8-4.  The game was tied at 4 after 7 innings, at which point HAL victimized the Chicago defense once more in precisely-timed fashion -- with the bases loaded.

For the second time in the series CHN pitchers failed to walk a batter, and we lost both times.  Maybe more walks and fewer hits would be a better game plan.

Alan
