Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals
The Cubs face the Cardinals 7 times this week in an interesting matchup: SLN is the top hitting team in the N.L.; CHN has the best pitching and defense. The Cards have a 7-game lead over Chicago, but *5* of that 7 comes from games which could go either way: St. Louis has the best record in the league (8-2, .800) in 1-run games; the Cubs, of course, have the worst (3-7, .300). CHN is hamstrung by a weak offense, scoring just 4.14 runs per game, second fewest in the league. However, our OBP and SLG add up to exactly the league average; so the Cubbie offense isn't actually weak, it's just unfortunate. This week, would the CHN offense finally break out and get up to where it deserves to be? Would our pitching and defense neutralize the potent SLN bats, including TWO .400 hitters? Would the breaks finally even out just a little? Have you ever known terminally rotten luck to prevail over fantastic luck? Me neither. ==================================================== Game 1: SLN Superman Harry Brecheen took the mound in the opener, but the Cubs weren't overly impressed as we banged out hit after hit -- and, in typical form, plated damn near nobody. CHN's Murry Dickson kept the St. Louis offense off balance and took a 2-0 shutout into the 7th before running suddenly into HAL's razor-sharp scalpel as the first 4 Cards' batters reached base and our painstakingly-built lead was erased in the blink of an eye. Taking no chances (of winning the game) the idiot CHN manager summoned the closer with the awesome card and the miserable propensity to choke. Jess Dobernic got a couple of outs and looked like he might LOB the bases loaded and preserve the tie, but good ol' Jess simply couldn't resist choking up the game-losing 2-run single. After all, LOBbing runners is the job of the Cubbie *batters*, not pitchers: we stranded 10 today, SEVEN OF THEM in scoring position. Final score: 4-2. ==================================================== Game 2: Bob Rush was brutalized today, but it's a close call as to whether he pitched any worse than St. Louis starter Lou Brissie. Brissie put up numbers that aren't far out of line with his season to date (6.1 IP, 13 baserunners, 5 runs) and he also got a result that's in line with his season: he won. Final score: 7-5, as Brissie's record improves to 6-1. The puny Cub offense again stood toe-to-toe with the Mighty Cards and we even solved our LOB problem -- not by plating runners, but by hitting into FOUR critical double plays. Hal Jeffcoat probably tied a record by tripling twice in today's contest. ==================================================== Game 3: It looked like a disastrous sweep for sure with Johnny 'No-Luck' Schmitz taking the mound for Chicago and, sure enough, Schmitz once again failed to win despite allowing just 6 baserunners and 1 run in 7 IP. But at least he didn't lose the game. Despite a significantly more generous card than Schmitz, SLN's Kent Peterson was superb on the mound and the score was tied 1-1 as we proceeded to extra innings with both starters long gone. A couple more timely GIDPs helped thwart some Cub rallies along the way. St. Louis had it won in the bottom of the 9th after a surgical hit & run single put runners on the corners with one out -- and Dobernic on the mound! -- but Ken Keltner was caught "stealing" by a mile at home on a second h&r attempt which didn't work quite so well and we amazingly survived to play another inning. One more was all it took: the Cubs strung together 3 straight singles in the 10th to take a 2-1 lead before (natch!) hitting into GIDP #3. Emil Kush ran into heavy turbulence in the bottom of the 10th but somehow got Musial to draw a bad split card to end the game and narrowly avert the sweep. Alan |
