Subject: Detroit @ Boston
Detroit visited Boston hoping to make up some ground in the AL race, but ended up losing 3 of the 4 games instead.
G1 Both teams started out fast and the game was tied, 3-3, after 4 innings. The Red Sox's Lou Boudreaux stroked an RBI triple and came in to score on Eddie Lake's error in the 5th to give Boston a 5-3 lead. That lead was expanded to 7-4 heading to the 9th. Detroit's 9th inning started off promising with 2 walks and a wild pitch. However, Joe Ostrowski was summoned from Boston's bullpen, and he set the Tigers down in order as only one run came home (on a groundout), and Boston had safely won, 7-5.
Final Score: Boston 7, Detroit 5 WP- Parnell 6-2, LP- Hutchinson 4-6, SV- Ostrowski (1) HR- Dimaggio (1), Williams (13)
G2 This was an interesting game of momentum. Detroit posted runs in the 2nd and 5th to lead, 2-0, after 6 innings. However, the Red Sox mounted a rally in the 7th. The inning started off innocently enough as the Tigers retired 2 of the first 3 hitters. But, Johnny Pesky singled and Boudreaux walked which brought up Ted Williams. The Splendid Splinter stroked a grand slam home run, and Boston had suddenly flipped a 2-run deficit into a 2-run lead. Nonetheless, Detroit immediately addressed their new deficit with an 8th inning rally of their own. The Tigers' first 4 hitters of the inning reached safely which tied the game, and Hal Wagner's sac fly put Detroit in the lead. Virgil Trucks (9 9 4 4 2 7) set the Red Sox down in order in the 9th for the one-run win.
Final Score: Detroit 5, Boston 4 WP- Trucks 6-2, LP- Erskine 0-2 HR- Vico (2), Williams (14)
G3 John Dobson (8 2/3
4 3 3 5 4) outlasted the Tigers' Hal Newhouser (6 3 3 3 5 6) to help the Red Sox take the lead in the series. After Newhouser was pulled, the Red Sox expanded their 3-1 lead when Dom Dimaggio and Bernie Tebbetts each stroked RBI singles in the 8th. Ostrowski was not quite as sharp this time as he gave up an RBI single and a walk before getting Jimmy Outlaw to end the game on a groundball with the bases loaded. Vic Wertz and Dimaggio led their respective teams with 2 hits apiece.
Final Score: Boston 5, Detroit 3 WP- Dobson 6-2, LP- Newhouser 5-3, SV- Ostrowski (2) HR- none
G4 This was the best pitchers' duel of the series. The Tigers' Dizzy Trout (7 2/3 4 1 1 4 2) battled Boston's Blix Donnelly (8 4 1 1 3 4) to a draw through 8 innings. In the 9th, Dimmagio led off with a single off of lefty Paul Minner and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Minner then K'd both Dick Whitman and Bert Haas. With 2 outs, Tebbetts came through
with an RBI single which sent the Sox fans home ecstatic.
Final Score: Boston 2, Detroit 1 WP- Harris 1-0, Minner 1-2 HR- none |
