Game 1 Joel Youngblood had 2 base hits at Shea Stadium where the New York NL Mets beat the Montreal Expos by the score of 3 to 2.
Montreal never recovered after New York NL took the lead in the 2nd inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. Montreal had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.
The win was credited to Don Aase (10-5) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs. Jeff Reardon got the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Vern Ruhle (1-2).
Game 2 Ken Kravec held Montreal to 2 hits as the New York NL Mets defeated the Montreal Expos 2 to 1 at Shea Stadium.
Kravec (9-6) had a strong outing. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 4.76 to 4.51. New York NL finished with just 5 hits in the victory.
Dickie Noles (4-2) was given the loss. The New York NL ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 56-30. Montreal can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8 record over the last couple weeks.
Game 3 Steve Carlton tossed a complete game and Keith Hernandez hit a homerun and had 2 RBI at Shea Stadium as the New York NL Mets won a thriller over the Montreal Expos in, 7 to 6.
New York NL scored the deciding run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Lee Mazzilli drew a walk. Toby Harrah stepped up next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Hernandez then doubled giving New York NL the victory and sending the 49,739 home-town fans home happy. New York NL had 9 hits for the night.
The victory was credited to Carlton (12-4) who went the distance, allowing 6 runs. The losing pitcher was David Palmer (3-8) in relief.
With this win, New York NL has a division leading 57-30 record. They have been 5-5 lately. Still in a bad slump, with this loss, Montreal is 2-8 lately and 46-41 on the year.
Game 4 At Shea Stadium the Montreal Expos easily handled the New York NL Mets by the score of 5 to 1.
The game started off with Montreal taking the lead in the first with 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Ivan Dejesus opened up the inning nicely when he lined a single. Alan Bannister stepped up next and he slapped a single. Mike Schmidt then slapped a one-base hit driving in a run. Schmidt took second on the throw. Richie Hebner followed and he would ground out plating one more runner. Andre Dawson came to the plate and would ground out scoring the final run of the inning. That was all Steve Eddy (4-0) needed. For the game Montreal out-hit New York NL 8 to 3.
Elias Sosa was credited with his 17th save. Craig Swan (13-4) was the loser. He gave up 5 runs and 8 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings.
