Stop. The. Presses.

Although we can never purchase a break of any kind against the 'elite' N.L. teams (2-12 vs. BRN and SLN this season; 24-14 vs. everyone else), the Cubs just extended their soon-to-be-terminated winning streak to SEVEN games by sweeping the #1 team in the A.L.!

Five of those 7 wins have been by just 1 run and the Cubs are now slightly above .500 in that category....!

Game 1: Gene Bearden and Joe Dobson had nearly identical starts but things looked to be terminal for the Cubbies when Boston took a 2-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the 8th.  But the Cubs used our secret weapon -- triples -- for the second time in the game when Eddie Waitkus led off the CHN 9th with one and scored on a sac fly.

Both sides turned the contest over to their bullpens at that point and Jess Dobernic provided a scoreless inning (!), then the CHN offense eked out a run in the 10th thanks to another triple.  This one was by Emil Verban, who was wild-pitched home with 2 outs by Carl Erskine (!!).  Final score: 3-2.

CHN registered only 5 hits all day (3 triples, 2 singles) while Boston only managed 7 and fanned 11 times against Bearden, Dobernic and Emil Kush, who earned his 3rd save of the year.

======================================

Game 2: The Red Sox decided that getting in a pitchers duel wasn't in their best interests, so they opened it up today.  The Sox erased our 1-0 lead in the second inning when Bert Haas nailed a 3-run gopher off Murry Dickson on a HR 1-3, fb(B) 4-20 -- and got the 3, natch.

CHN fought back with a run in the 4th, and gave it immediately back.  But another Chicago triple plated one run in the 5th and Andy Pafko gave us the lead with a 2-run homer later in the frame.  And Dickson erased the lead again moments later when Haas delivered a 2-out RBI single.

With the score tied in the 8th, the Cubs loaded the bases with 2 outs and Dickson due up.  Dickson, a far better hitter than he is a pitcher, drew a walk on his own card off of Mickey Harris to force in what turned out to be the winning run after Ted Gray retired Boston in the 9th.  Final score: 6-5.

Boston's offense was very efficient today despite making just 7 hits again; they got 9 baserunners and stranded only 3.

======================================

Game 3: Two timely blown-x plays by the #1 defense in the N.L. gave Boston another early 3-spot but Ellis Kinder held the fort nicely after that, allowing no more runs to the Sox until we had built a 5-3 lead in the late innings and were just beginning to choke it away.

Consecutive doubles with 2 outs and the bases empty in the BOA 8th cut our lead to 5-4 and sent Kinder to the showers, and the road manager decided to try to get 2 decent outings from Dobernic in one series.

Predictably, it didn't work.

Haas walked to open the Boston 9th and Birdie Tebbetts singled.  Dobernic was yanked in favor of Ted Gray, but Johnny Pesky's masterful 1-out squeeze bunt plated Haas and tied the score.  Neither squad threatened in the 10th or 11th but Clyde Kluttz doubled leading off the CHN 12th and pinch-runner Bob Rush scored from third on Peanuts Lowrey's 2-out single.

Kush narrowly survived the bottom of the inning, and issued the Cubs' first IW in an owner-played game in about a decade, but with 2 on and 1 out Kush fanned Doerr and got Dimaggio to ground out.  Final score: 6-5 in 12.
