JULY 13 First baseman Steve Garvey had 3 base hits and Don Sutton delivered 7 solid innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres by the score of 2 to 1 at San Diego Stadium. Los Angeles scored the deciding run in the top of the 9th inning. Terry Puhl ripped a base-knock. After an out was recorded, Ken Landreaux came up and he was hit by a pitch. One out later, Mario Mendoza stepped in and he lined a single scoring the run. Bobby Castillo(3-1) got help from Bob Welch who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 13th save. Rich Gossage(2-3) ended up with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning allowing 2 hits and no walks.
