Game 1 In a tight game it was the Montreal Expos 10, the Atlanta Braves 8 at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Merv Rettenmund had a good evening at the plate. He laced a one-base hit in the 3rd inning, belted a three-run homer (his 1st of the season) in the 4th inning and slapped a base-hit scoring a run in the 6th inning. Montreal rapped out 15 hits for the night.
The win went to Vern Ruhle (4-3) who allowed 8 runs in 5 innings. Elias Sosa earned the save, his 22nd. Randy Lerch (0-2) took the loss in relief. He allowed Montreal 4 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work.
'He gutted it out' Steve Bivens said of Ruhle. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity, more than his pitching’.
Game 2 Third baseman Mike Schmidt ripped 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves by a score of 9 to 3.
Schmidt provided much of the offense. He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in the 1st inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 40th of the season) in the 2nd inning. Montreal banged out 10 on the night.
The win went to Larry Christenson (2-0) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Nino Espinosa (13-14) absorbed the loss. Montreal now has a record of 65-55. With this loss, Atlanta has a 4-6 record of late, 56-60 overall.
Game 3 Steve Rogers went 8 and one third strong innings at Fulton Co. Stadium as the Montreal Expos beat the Atlanta Braves 1 to 0.
Atlanta surrendered what proved to be the only run of the contest when Montreal scored in the top of the 7th inning. Montreal had just 4 hits for the night.
Rogers (14-6) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Rogers got relief help from Elias Sosa who gained credit for his 23rd save. Phil Niekro (11-14) was hit with the loss. He surrendered just 4 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.
Game 4 Joe Niekro hurled a fine complete game shutout and center fielder Eddie Miller had 2 base hits as the Atlanta Braves topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 1 to 0 at Fulton Co. Stadium.
Niekro (12-11) put on a good performance. He gave up just 4 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings. Montreal made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.
Scott Sanderson (9-8) was charged with the loss. 'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Steve Bivens said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'
