Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals

HAL's brutal sabotage of the Chicago defense notwithstanding, the somehow-resilient Cubs came 2 unearned runs away from sweeping the first place Cardinals....

Game 1: Four timely Cubbie errors (and many other blown x's) made it seem like just another routine day on the mound for Luckless Gene Bearden -- but it wasn't!  For one thing, the offense showed up and scored 6 times against Red Munger & 3 relievers; for another thing, Bearden got the Cards to strand 10 of the plethora of baserunners he permitted, and chief arsonist Jess Dobernic got them to LOB 2 more.  Final score: 6-4.  Andy Pafko atoned for one of his 2 errors with a 2-run homer later on.

========================================

Game 2: Murry Dickson and Howie Pollet hooked up in a pitchers duel, and Dickson had a 1-0 advantage via a run that he scored himself.  But in the bottom of the 6th a bunt single, yet another timely blown-x, and a critical throwing error handed the home team 3 runs, 2 of them unearned, and that was all she wrote.  Final score: 4-2.  Dickson permitted just 7 baserunners and 1 earned run in 6 IP and deserved a better fate.

========================================

Game 3: Two more important unearned runs today as HAL's sabotage continued -- but he forgot to ruin our ability to turn DPs.  It took 10 innings to win this one despite the fact that the Cubs never did permit an earned run, but it never would have gotten that far if the CHN infield hadn't turned 4 DPs (and SLN stranded 13 runners who weren't erased by DPs).

Chicago outhit St. Louis 14-10 and amassed a 20-13 advantage in total bases, but a lot of that advantage didn't occur until overtime, when the Cubs racked up 6 hits in the 10th including back to back triples.  Our sudden 6-2 lead was of course threatened within microseconds, as Ralph Hamner loaded the bases for St. Louis with 0 outs in the bottom of the frame.  But a lineout was followed by DP #4 to end the contest.  Dobernic got the win with 3 innings of scoreless (!) relief.

========================================

Game 4: The most ironic starting pitcher matchup of the season: 2 lefty hurlers with identical outstanding Cy Young award-type cards, and nearly identical ERAs.

Identical results in 1948?  Not so much.  One starter entered the game with a record of 14-2; the other.... pitches for the Cubs.

Knowing that asking for a clutch hit was likely to be pointless, the Cubs put up 3 early runs via back to back squeeze bunts in the 2nd, and a sac fly in the 3rd.

Luckless Johnny Schmitz (6-9 entering the game, 2.62 ERA) had a rare day indeed!  The only blemish he suffered today was an RBI double by Terry Moore in the 3rd but the lead remained a very tense 3-1 until nearly the end.

With Brecheen having been removed after 6 innings, the Cubs finally generated some breathing room when massive underachiever Bob Scheffing came through with a 3-run homer in the 8th and we tacked on another run in the 9th.  Final score: 7-1.  The Cubs also finally made it through a day without committing an error.

Alan
