Subject: Cubs @ White Sox

The Cubs entered the week with the 2nd best home record in the majors (and, therefore, were swept).  Success when playing away from Wrigley remains a mystery to the Cubs, however.  Good thing we were taking the shortest possible road trip this week, but even that proved far more difficult than it should have been....

Game 1: Cubbie batters went most of the series unable to buy a break, demonstrated nicely today as the offense managed all of 5 hits against CHA's 4-laden defense, and Ellis Kinder was victimized by some surgical split cards.  Final score: 4-1.  The only "break" any Cub got during this game (and series) was that the White Sox did as lousy a lob of plating their baserunners as the Cubs did.

Cubs pitcher Gene Bearden got his first of two successful pinch-hits in the series during today's contest, and wound up with a 3-game hitting streak when it was over.

==============================================

Game 2: Bearden (1 for 3 at the plate) took the mound today and pitched well but, in accordance with his unabated season of massively underachieving misery, failed to win the game.  The Cubs compiled a tremendous 21-7 advantage in total bases, but got just about 0 of those TB when scoring a run would have resulted, so we turned that power into just 2 meager runs.  Fortunately we only allowed 1; Cubs eke out a 2-1 win in 10 innings.

Bearden had a 1-0 lead from inning #1 through inning #7, then coughed up the tying run in the Sox 8th with the help of a timely throwing error when a low-percentage runner was trying to score.

After Peanuts Lowrey singled and was picked off in the 10th, Eddie Waitkus hit his 11th home run of 1948 and Ted Gray made it hold up.

==============================================

Game 3: The teams played 10 innings again today -- and then 12 more -- thus achieving one of the longest and most offensively inept games in league history.  Only 2 Pre-Smiley games prior to 1948 have ever exceeded 22 innings.

CHN starter Murry Dickson was gophered with 2 outs in the 1st inning, good for 3 runs; the Sox would not score again in regulation.

Stubby "Batting Practice" Overmire baffled the feeble Cubs for 4 innings but we finally reached him for 4 hits and 3 runs in the 5th inning; Dickson raised his batting average to .288 with a single that drove in the tying run.  And then nothing but LOB for either side for a long time.

The North Side took the lead in the 13th when pinch-hitting pitcher Bearden tripled (!) home Phil Cavarretta with one out, and then (but of course) was stranded.  Otherwise the run that Emil Kush choked up for the South Side in the bottom of the inning wouldn't have been enough to prolong the agony.  Billy Goodman's single made the score 4-4 but the would-be winning run was gunned down, proving that the baserunning luck in the series was only 95% against the Cubs instead of 100%.  And then another brief intermission from further scoring.

Nine frames (one entire ballgame) later, the Cubs put together 4 singles against game one starter Schoolboy Rowe and terminated the marathon by the score of 6-4.

A record was surely established when *NOT ONCE* during the 22 innings did a Cub batter draw a walk.  There was only 1 error, and it took 20 innings for that to happen.

CHN relievers Jess Dobernic (!), Ralph Hamner & winning pitcher Doyle Lade combined for 8 non-consecutive innings of no-hit ball; former starter Bob Rush tossed 5 innings of relief and both Rowe and Howie Judson did the same for the Sox.
