Game 1 First baseman Richie Hebner had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Montreal Expos defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 8 to 4 at Busch Stadium.
Montreal came up with 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning with the help of 5 hits. The big moment was provided by Hebner who silenced Busch Stadium as he tripled plating two runs. For the game Montreal out-hit St. Louis 11 to 7.
The win was credited to Larry Christenson (4-0) who went 8 innings allowing 4 runs. The losing pitcher was Joaquin Andujar (10-9). He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings.
No one has been able to stop Montreal lately as they lengthened their winning streak to 6 games.
Game 2 Third baseman Mike Schmidt slammed a homerun and had 4 RBI as the blistering-hot Montreal Expos outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 3.
Schmidt had a good evening at the plate. He lined a base-hit in the 4th inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 43rd of the season) in the 7th inning and doubled scoring two baserunners in the 9th inning. Montreal and St. Louis each finished the night with 9 hits.
Steve Rogers (16-7) allowed 3 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Dave Freisleben (2-4) took the loss in relief. He was touched for 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
Montreal continued on their recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 7 games and counting. 'I'm glad to get the win', Rogers said. 'We've got some good momentum going now.'
Game 3 At Busch Stadium, the St. Louis fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Scott Sanderson (10-8) finally bested his St. Louis opposite, Pete Vuckovich (10-11), by the score of 1 to 0.
Sanderson gave Montreal a solid outing. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings. Sanderson struckout 8 St. Louis batters. St. Louis had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Elias Sosa earned his 26th save. The loss was charged to Vuckovich. He allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.
'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us tonight' Rob Tomlinson said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'
Game 4 The red-hot Montreal Expos had very little trouble at Busch Stadium downing the reeling St. Louis Cardinals while winning their ninth consecutive game. The score was 7 to 2.
Ed Whitson (8-12) pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 5 innings allowing 5 hits and no walks. Montreal simply wore out the St. Louis pitching staff, scoring in 6 different innings.
Bob Forsch (11-8) was the loser. He pitched 7 innings allowing 11 hits and 1 walk.
