Subject: Detroit @ Washington

G1 Things started off well for the home team as Walt Masterson (8 7 3 3 3 4) kept Washington in the game just long enough to come from behind and win.  Detroit led, 3-1, on the basis of a 3-run 6th which was keyed by a Roy Smalley 2-run double.  With starter Art Houtteman (7 1/3 6 4 4 2 3) still on the mound in the bottom of the 8th, the Senators began their comeback. PH Connie Ryanled off with a double.  Al Evans singled home Ryan before Doby made the first out on a flyout.  When Del Ennis walked as the potential go-ahead run, Houtteman was lifted for Jock Thompson.  Thompson was completely ineffective allowingruns.  Detroit got two runners on with 2 out in the 9th, but Hoot Evers was retired on a popout to end the game.  Second baseman Al Kozar led Washington with a 2-for-4 game while Smalley was 2-for-4 for Detroit.

Final Score: Washington 6, Detroit 3
WP- Masterson 10-10, LP- Houtteman 9-9, SV- Gromek (24)
HR- none

G2 Both teams started off strong as the first inning ended in a 2-2 tie.  However, it was Detroit starter Hal Newhouser (9 4 3 3 6 6) who held the Senators off the scoreboard until Kozar singled home Doby for Washington's final score in the 7th inning.  Meanwhile, Detroit took only the 2nd inning off before the first 4 hitters of the 3rd reached base which made the score, 4-2.  Hoot Evers added an insurance run for the Tigers in the 9th when Evers singled home Eddie Lake.  Lake was great out of the leadoff spot with a 3-for-4 effort while scoring twice. And, cleanup hitter Pat Mullin's first inning 2-run jack was his 30th of the season.  No Senator hitter had multiple hits in this game.

Final Score: Detroit 5, Washington 3
WP- Newhouser 17-14, LP- Scarborough 9-8
HR- Mullin (30)

G3 Detroit got huge early innings off of Bill Wight (2 5 7 4 4 1) and the Senators bullpen.  Detroit scored 7 in the 3rd and 5 more runs in the 4th to make a laugher out of this one.  In all, Detroit hitters racked up 20 hits and took 6 walks.  The two main contributors of this outburst were CF Evers (6 3 3 5) and 1B Sam Vico (4 2 4 5).  Although Detroit did not homer, the Tigers did collect 6 doubles.  Doby was the primary force for Washington going 4-for-5 with a homer and 3 RBI.

Final Score: Detroit 18, Washington 4
WP- Hutchinson 12-12, LP- Wight 7-17
HR- Doby (14)

G4 Virgil Trucks (9 4 1 1 1 3) was determined to prevent Washington from obtaining a split and his complete game was the primary reason Detroit registered its 3rd win in the series.  In the 2nd, Vico scored on a fielder's choice after tripling, and in the 3rd Detroit benefitted from 2 errors from 3B Mark Christman to score twice on SS Sam Dente's single.  That was more than enough with Trucks collecting his 16th win. Evers and Vic Wertz were the only players to collect 2 hits in the finale for Detroit.

Final Score: Detroit 4, Washington 1
WP- Trucks 16-13, LP- Leonard 10-14
HR- Spence (11)
