Game 1 Third baseman Art Howe had 2 base hits and Don Robinson was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Montreal Expos by a score of 6 to 1 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Pittsburgh took the lead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring a single run. Pittsburgh totaled 9 on the night.
Robinson (7-10) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. The losing pitcher was Ed Whitson (8-13). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 4 innings.
The Pittsburgh ballclub's record now stands at 70-69. Montreal has a record of 79-60 after the loss.
Game 2 Willie Stargell blasted a homerun as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 7 to 6 at Three Rivers Stadium.
Pittsburgh came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs. Bill Madlock led off and he drew a walk. Stargell stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Art Howe then delivered a base-hit bringing in a run. Steve Nicosia followed and he grounded into a double play. Mike Easler stepped into the box and reached on an error scoring the final run of the inning. Montreal threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.
The victory went to Bruce Kison (14-6) who went 2/3 of an inning, allowing no runs. Kent Tekulve earned his 29th save. Elias Sosa (5-5) was given the loss in relief.
When questioned about the loss, Steve Bivens said, 'The fans got to see an exciting game out there tonight. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'
Game 3 Craig Minetto (3-0)with the help of the bullpen handcuffed the Pittsburgh Pirates batters at Three Rivers Stadium in an evening game. The Montreal Expos scored 6 runs for the win.
Montreal went ahead for good in the top of the 2nd inning scoring 2 runners on 1 hit. The early run support proved sufficient for Minetto and Montreal . That was all the run support Minetto required. Montreal had 10 hits overall, while Pittsburgh had 7.
The loss was charged to Eddie Solomon (13-10). He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.
Game 4 Shortstop Freddie Patek had 3 base hits at Three Rivers Stadium as the Pittsburgh Pirates won a thriller over the Montreal Expos in, 7 to 6.
The game was won by Pittsburgh with a run in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Patek delivered a base-hit. One out later, Dave Parker stepped in and he doubled giving Pittsburgh the victory and sending the 26,998 home-town fans home happy. This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept changing - 5 times in all.
Kent Tekulve (10-7) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Steve Eddy (4-2) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 hits and no walks.
