Game 1 Baseballs were flying all over the ballpark as the Montreal Expos ran roughshod over the seemingly hapless New York NL Mets. The Montreal offense rolled up a total of 19 runs!.
Larry Christenson had a big day against New York NL. He doubled which was good for two runs in the 2nd inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 8th inning. Montreal kept the scorekeepers busy in the 2nd inning when they had 6 runs on 5 hits, the 6th inning with 5 runs on 5 hits and the 8th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 4 hits. Montreal had 20 hits for the game and New York NL had 14.
The victory went to Christenson (5-1) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs. Craig Swan (21-10) was hit with the loss. He gave up 7 hits and no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings.
Game 2 Joel Youngblood slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI at Shea Stadium where the potent New York NL Mets beat the Montreal Expos by the score of 4 to 2.
New York NL came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Johnny Bench started the rally when he drew a walk. Leon Roberts was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Youngblood then popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 14th of the season). New York NL had 7 hits for the game and Montreal had 4.
The win went to Sparky Lyle (6-3) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. Sid Monge (2-10) was tagged with the loss in relief. This win by New York NL continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten games, they have a record of 9-1. For the season, they are a division leading 98-50. Still in a bad slump, with this loss, Montreal is 2-8 lately and 81-67 on the year.
Game 3 The New York NL Mets nipped the Montreal Expos 7 to 6 at Shea Stadium in a hard fought contest.
In the 3rd inning New York NL scored 3 runs when they had 3 base hits. Montreal threatened in the 9th but New York NL was able to put down the rally.
Don Aase(18-8) allowed 3 runs in 6 innings, and picked up the victory. Aase got help from Don Stanhouse who earned his 28th save. Scott Sanderson(11-10) was tagged with the loss.
