AUGUST 26 Gary Lavelle was great in relief at Candlestick Park where the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 4 to 2. San Francisco brought 3 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning with the help of 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Willie McCovey got things going when he smacked a single. Jack Clark followed and he lined a single. Dennis Littlejohn then lined a base-hit knocking in a run. Littlejohn took second on the throw. Dave Chalk was up next and he doubled adding another two runs to their total. The early run support proved sufficient for Bob Knepper(12-14) and San Francisco. That was all the run support Knepper required. Knepper got relief help from Lavelle who was excellent in relief and gained credit for his 5th save. David Clyde(1-4) suffered the loss. 'He gutted it out' Bob Mittleman said of Knepper. 'I was very impressed by his tenacity.' AUGUST 28 At Candlestick Park, the San Francisco faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's duel. Tom Griffin(5-8) finally bested his San Francisco counterpart, Lynn McGlothen(10-11), by the score of 2 to 1. Los Angeles had 1 run cross the plate in the top of the 7th inning. San Francisco threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short. Griffin got help from Bob Welch who was credited with his 20th save. McGlothen was given the loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 8 hits and no walks. Bob Mittleman was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we just made one too many mistakes. Davey Lopes followed and he was walked intentionally. Mario Mendoza came to the plate and smacked a single driving in one more runner. Garvey added to the outburst and reached on an error scoring the final run of the inning. That early scoring was all that Sutton(10-13) needed.
