Subject: 1948 World Series is underway

In a series being autoplayed at league HQ, the Boston Red Sox opened up at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis with a tense 1-0 victory over the host Cardinals.

Mel Parnell was opposed by N.L. Cy Young award winner Harry Brecheen and neither starter would allow even one run today and only once in the first 8 innings did a team get a runner as far as third base.

Boston mildly threatened right off the bat when Ted Williams walked after Lou Boudreau's one-out single but Brecheen asserted himself: Bobby Doerr fanned and Dom Dimaggio flew out.  Granny Hamner's single with 2 outs in the 4th sent Ken Keltner to third but Barney McCosky's grounder ended that rally.

Brecheen worked through 6 easy innings (1 hit, 1 walk) but didn't answer the bell for the 7th frame and Kent Peterson took over.  Williams doubled on Peterson's second pitch and one out later Dimaggio drew a free pass, but Birdie Tebbetts and Sam Mele were unable to advance the runners an inch.

#8 hitter Bert Haas singled to open the BOA 8th and the Boston manager chose to keep Parnell in the contest rather than send up a pinch hitter.  Parnell bunted successfully but once again the subsequent hitters couldn't budge the runner.

The scenario was repeated in the St. Louis 8th: #8 hitter Del Rice registered a leadoff single and Peterson remained in to bunt.  But his bunt was not as good as Parnell's and the slow-moving catcher was erased at second.  A 2-out walk put another runner aboard but Stan Musial popped up and the game remained scoreless into the 9th.

But not for long.

Leadoff hitter Williams worked the count in his favor and then took Peterson deep over the right field wall.  A frustrated Peterson used his next pitch to plunk Doerr and he then unraveled entirely, walking Dimaggio on a 3-2 pitch with still nobody out.

Red Embree relieved Peterson and got Tebbetts to fly out, Doerr tagging up and easily advancing to third.  Doerr tried to score on Mele's grounder to Keltner, but his attempt to bowl over Del Rice failed and he was out.  Embree escaped the jam when Haas flew out.

The first two batters of the SLN 9th made Parnell work, but the pitcher prevailed.  Down to their final out, the Cardinals sent Bill Baker up to hit for Hamner -- and Baker lined one into the gap for a triple!  After making the nearly-exhausted Parnell labor some more (23 pitches in the 9th inning and 135 altogether) McCosky lined another fat pitch into the gap but Dimaggio made a spectacular diving catch (a "GOLD-GLOVE" play, said the PBP) to end the game.

The series resumes tomorrow with Vern Bickford and Lou Brissie the scheduled starters.

Alan
