Subject: 1948 World Series, game 2

A series which was supposed to be highly offensive has now seen a total of 4 runs scored in 2 games and a pair of one-run decisions.

Vern Bickford and Lou Brissie were the starters today, and both sides got a runner aboard in the first inning and both times that runner was erased by a DP.  Hitting into DPs would become the unfortunate theme of the day for the Cardinals, who hit into FIVE of them and probably set a postseason record in the process.

St. Louis almost broke on top in the second when 2 runners reached base after 2 were out and nobody on.  Barney McCosky tried to score from second when Del Rice singled to left, but Ted Williams gunned McCosky down.

Half an inning later, Williams drove home Bert Haas with the contest's first run, but the Sox LOBbed the bases loaded when Brissie whiffed Dom Dimaggio.

Boston pitcher Bickford drew a walk to open the BOA 5th, moved up 90 feet when Johnny Pesky also walked, went to third on a force play and made the score 2-0 via Williams' sac fly.

The Cardinals finally dented the scoreboard for the first time in the series when Ken Keltner launched a solo homer with 2 outs in the 6th.  Then came the train of critical GIDPs.

Nippy Jones PH for Brissie in the 7th with 1 on and 1 out and went 6-4-3.

The 8th inning was the most devastating of all, as for the second time in the series the Cards got a late triple and failed to score it.  The triple in game 1 came with 2 outs; this one was a leadoff triple by Richie Ashburn.

Following Ashburn's dash to third, Johnny Lipon and Stan Musial both walked and Boston closer Erv Palica was summoned to try to minimize the damage.  Which he certainly did -- Keltner's grounder to Palica turned into a 1-2-3 DP.  Enos Slaughter was passed intentionally to reload the bases, but McCosky (as in the 9th inning yesterday) flew out to end St. Louis' biggest threat of the day.

Anti-climactically, the Cards hit into DP #5 in the 9th when Rice tapped one perfectly to Bobby Doerr after Granny Hamner had opened the inning with a single.  Final score: 2-1.

After an off day, the series moves to Boston where Howie Pollet will oppose A.L. Cy Young-ster Joe Dobson.

Alan
