The moderately talented but totally luckless Cubs start the 1947 season on pace to shatter the all-time record for misfortune, and 3 games into the season are already scouting the 1946 draft pool heavily in anticipation of having a top pick in the draft....

Game 2: We took our first lead of the season by scoring twice in the first inning (leaving the bases loaded).... and wasted no time whatsoever in pulling off our first choke of the season; the score was 3-2 after 1 inning, all 3 SLN runs crossing the plate when Cubbie starter Frank Papish repeatedly refused to get the third out.

One team's offense pretty much stopped at that point, the other's did not.  Cubs lose, 7-4.  Papish combined with reliever Emil Kush to successfully find every loaded column or, failing that, every surgical on-base chance in a nearly empty column, permitting 17 baserunners in 8 innings.  We erased 3 of those runners via DPs otherwise the damage, bad as it was, would have been even worse.

=======================================

Game 3: Luckless Johnny Schmitz did nothing to change his well-deserved nickname today. He did pitch fairly well, but the only thing that really counts is the outcome and it went the wrong way as usual.  Outrageously horrible luck on bunts played a critical role today.

Both teams LOBbed a pair in the first but the Cardinals amassed what turned out to be an insurmountable lead in the second when they scored a run.  Three walks (the last of which forced in a run) surrounded a bunt single from pitcher Howie Pollet.  It was the first of TWO "he lays down a great bunt!" messages on the PBP for D-grade bunter Pollet.

Pollet's fabulous day wasn't confined to plate appearances; the mediocre hurler got every possible break on the mound too.

A walk and two singles produced nothing for the Cubs in the third because Peanuts Lowrey found the automatic out when trying to steal.

Loading the bases with NOBODY out produced nothing for the Cubs in the fourth because -- when even a GIDP would have tied the game -- the next batter rolled an empty column (of course) but at least it was full of gb(A)'s.... he found the popup.  Naturally the next two batters also failed to get the ball out of the infield.

Runners on the corners with 1 out in the 6th produced nothing for the Cubs when, desperate to score a run in any way possible, grade-A bunter Ray Mack tried to squeeze the run home.  None of that "he lays down a great bunt!" stuff for the Cubs, no sir.  No matter, ANY bunt would have been OK.

Mack missed the pitch, the runner on third was automatically out.

The Cubs finally realized their fate, and didn't even bother to get any baserunners in the final three frames.  Final score: 1-0.

Alan
