Subject: Detroit @ St.Louis
The Browns pitching was off to a good start as St.Louis finished off the Tigers 3 out of 4 in the opening series in St. Lou.
G2 The Tigers took advantage of a walk and a subsequent error to get on the board first vs. Larry Jansen (9 2 2 0 2 5). In the 2nd inning, 5th hitter Vic Wertz walked and then came around to score on Hal Wagner's double before Wagner himself scored on CF Harry Walker's misplay. Tigers' staff ace Hal Newhouser (8 6 3 3 2 3) could not hold the lead as he allowed a 2nd inning Bob Dillinger 2-out RBI single and Wally Judnich's RBI triple in the 3rd. Judnich came on in to score on a groundout to provide the winning and final runof the game. Jansen equaled the entire Detroit team's output of hits by going 2-for-4 in the 9th hole for St.Louis.
Final Score: St. Louis 3, Detroit 2 WP- Jansen 1-0, LP- Newhouser 0-1 HR- none
G3 The Tigers decided to score the majority of runs in the series in this particular contest. I would've preferred to have spread the runs around to be more competitive, but Browns' pitching prevented Detroit from doing well in the other 3 games... but not this one. After breaking up a scoreless game with Wertz's 2-run double in the 5th inning, the Tigers scored 2 more in the 6th, 4 in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th innings. The outburst included 16 hits and 6 walks but still no home runs for the visitors. Meanwhile, Fred Hutchinson backed up his 3-for-5 day athelp from his Browns' mates as he went 3-for-3 with the lone walk. SS Eddie Lake was the only Detroit starter to go hitless, but he did reach base twice on walks.
Final Score: Detroit 10, St. Louis 0 WP- Hutchinson 1-0, LP- Potter 0-1 HR- none
G4 For the 3rd time in 4 games, St.Louis got another outstanding starting pitching effort. This time it was Cliff Fannin (7 2/3 2 1 1 5 8) stymied Detroit until the 8th inning when the Tigers cut into the Browns' 3-0 lead by plating Pat Mullin on a bases-loaded walk to Hal Wagner by reliever Vic Raschi. St.Louis came right back and regained the 3-run margin when Judnich doubled home Vern Stephens in the bottom of the 8th inning. Joe Gordon led the Browns with a 2-for-3 day that included the game's only long ball.
Final Score: St. Louis 4, Detroit 1 WP- Fannin 1-0, LP- Trout 0-1 HR- Gordon (1)
In the 3 games that St Louis won in this series, they out-hit Detroit .261 (24/92) with 2 HRs to .133 (12/90) with no homers. .In Game 3 (the Detroit win), the Tigers got 16 hits and all 4 extra base hits in comparison to 7 hits for the Browns. Total scoring for the series: Detroit 15, St. Louis 10 |
