Subject: Cubs @ Cardinals

The two teams Chicago faced in Week 1 just happened to overachieve the most of any in the league that week (funny how that works) while the Cubs massively underachieved the most, though the Cubs were more talented than either opponent.  The CHN schedule is exactly the same in Week 2 as it was in Week 1, but we achieved a more adequate outcome in this series.

The Cubs probably have set some kind of record by going 11 games into a season without managing to record home run #1 yet -- but it's certainly not from lack of effort (see game 4)....

Game 1: The Cubs' lucklessness did not abate right away, though it seemed that it might when Peanuts Lowrey delivered a 2-out single in the first that plated a run and gave us a quick 1-0 lead.  Final score: 3-1, and you don't have to ask who had the '3'.  The Cubbie lead was frittered away in the 5th and moments later we LOBbed the bases loaded (11 LOB in all today) which was immediately followed by SLN tacking on an unnecessary insurance run.  We got the tying run on base in the 9th, scored 0.  But at least we didn't allow 8 runs today, as was our habit last week.

=================================================

Game 2: The Cubs took another early lead today; this time it was 2 runs and -- miracle of miracles -- we didn't entirely choke it away!  We got 2 in the second, Frank Papish gave one right back, and that became the final score.  The Cubs have no power (apparently) in the conventional sense, but did hit 5 triples in this series and the one by Dom Dallesandro in this contest was sandwiched around two singles and constituted our entire offense for the day.

Papish went the distance on a 7-hitter, lowering his ERA to a mere 7.71.

=================================================

Game 3: Luckless Johnny Schmitz suffered another disaster, as the Cubs are incapable of going an entire series without at least one game where our opponent gets 110% of the breaks.  This was that game.  Final score: 7-0.  The Cubs have made a Cy Young contender out of mediocre starter Howie Pollet, whose 1947 record now reads: 2 starts, 2-0 record, 2 complete games, 0.00 ERA.

Too bad he can't face the Cubs every start, but you could say that about any pitcher in the league.

=================================================

Game 4: The Cubs had *SIX* split card chances at home runs today, of course went 0 for 6 and got flyouts every time including drawing a 2 (needed a 1) and a 3 (needed a 2).  IOW, a typical Cubbie performance.

Also typical was the fact that we couldn't purchase a run, but amazingly enough neither could St. Louis and the game was tied 0-0 in the 7th.  Which meant it was Chokin' Time, and we did.  A clutch single in the 7th gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead and a sac fly in the 8th rubbed some more salt in the Cubs' gaping 1947 wound.

But in the 9th inning of game #11, the Cubs got our first rally and first breaks of the 1947 season.  Four straight singles after 1 out plated just 1 run and left the bases full.  When Jim Russell fanned defeat was 99.9% certain.  Somehow, Lowrey came through with the 5th single of the inning and tied the game!

Then we broke out the attack of the triples: Bill Nicholson led off the 10th with one and scored on a passed ball (good thing he did; we got no other hits).  But reliever Jesse Flores quickly allowed the first 3 Cards in the 10th to reach base, and one scored so we went to the 11th.

After a Don Johnson single, Flores tripled (!) and Russell followed with another one.  He scored on Lowrey's double and when the smoke cleared 4 runs had scored though we LOBbed the bases full yet again.  This time Flores managed to retire the side in order and the Cubs achieved a series split with the unlikely but well-deserved 8-4 win.
