Previous message                 Next message Message #: 14440 Message from: Rob Tomlinson Sent: Oct 8, 2006 Subject: SMILEY - WEEK ONE - ST LOUIS @ NEW YORK The Cardinals start out 2-1, and really should have swept the series, if it wasn't for a bad pitching change decision, and a Dick Tidrow blown slave. Overall I am happy with the start.   OPENING DAY: WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Johnny Bench blocked the plate, saving a run! The St. Louis Cardinals tallied 4 runs in the 5th inning and cruised to a 6 to 1 victory over the New York NL Mets at SHEA STADIUM. In the 5th inning St. Louis scored 4 runs with the help of 3 hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Ken Oberkfell who quieted the crowd when he tripled plating all three baserunners.  St. Louis finished with 11 hits while New York NL ended up with 5.  Pete Vuckovich(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 6 innings. Vuckovich got help from Joaquin Andujar who was credited with his 1st save.  Steve Carlton(0-1) absorbed the loss.   GAME TWO: First baseman Leon Durham jacked one out of the ballyard as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York NL Mets by a score of 3 to 2. The game was won by St. Louis with a run in the top of the 9th inning.  Bake McBride doubled.  Cesar Cedeno came next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Ozzie Smith then hit a deep fly scoring the run.  Both teams ended up with 9 on the night.  The win went to John Littlefield(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Dick Tidrow was credited with his 1st save.  The losing pitcher was Neil Allen(0-1) in relief.    GAME THREE: Dave Cash had 2 base hits as the New York NL Mets rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over St. Louis Cardinals, 9 to 8. New York NL came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits.  Sixto Lezcano led off and started the rally when he lashed a single, and an error was also committed.  Johnny Bench next to the plate and he blasted a two-run home run (his 2nd of the season) resulting in an exciting win for New York NL and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.  Despite scoring in 6 separate innings, St. Louis could not get the win.  The victory was credited to Jim Kaat(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. The loss was charged to Dick Tidrow(0-1) in relief.  He was unable to retire a batter allowing 2 hits and no walks.   Rob Get your email and more, right on the new Yahoo.com
