Subject: Cubs @ Braves

After crashing back to earth during a typically luckless home series, the Cubs invaded Gotham City and absolutely dominated the Giants, outhitting them 40-21 in 3 games.  Thanks to the fact that NOOOOOOOBODY chokes like the Cubs, the scores hardly reflect that dominance and what should have been an easy sweep was anything but.  In fact, it wasn't a sweep at all....

Game 1: CHN hitters lost at least half a dozen hits on routinely rotten split card draws, but we had a 3-0 lead in the 8th and the Giants had been unable to generate any offense up to that point.  So of course it became "Chokin' Time" for the Cubs, as it always does.  With 2 outs and nobody on in the 8th, closer Emil Kush donated a 2-run gopher to Johnny Mize; then with the Giants down to their final out and still trailing by a run, Paul Erickson gave up 3 straight singles when 2 simply wouldn't have gotten the job done.  Tie game.

In the 10th however, the Cubs got a homer from Clyde Kluttz only because no split card was required thanks to the bandbox that is the Polo Grounds.  Russ Meers had replaced Choker Erickson in the 9th and by doing so earned himself a win that rightfully belonged to starter Johnny Schmitz.  Final score: 5-3.

It would not be the final time in the series that a major choke occurred when just one more out would have ended the game.  No matter how well we may be hitting, these are still the Cubs.

==================================================

Game 2: The one game where the final score accurately reflected the way the game was played.  Cubs win 13-4 and could have scored many more times, as the LOB figures were as lopsided as the score (10-3).  Second baseman Ray Mack plated 5 runners and starter Murry Dickson went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and also tossed a complete game, walking just 1 and fanning 10.  His only 2 blemishes were 2 super-cheap BPHRs.  We would be haunted by a couple more shortly.

==================================================

Game 3: The Cubs took a 3-0 lead in the first and then proceeded to do nothing but LOB runners and hit into several critical DPs.  Those clutch failures and the fact that we never scored again wouldn't matter because Hank Wyse was pitching a shutout.

The shutout and the 3-run lead held up all the way until 2 were out in the bottom of the 9th.

Did I mention that NOBODY chokes like the Cubs?

Emil Kush had entered the game for Wyse with 1 out in the 9th and 2 runners on base and got Bobby Thomson to foul out.  Then pinch-hitter Ernie Lombardi stepped in with 2 outs and the Cubs did what nobody does better than us (or more often).  Kush obligingly choked up the game-tying automatic cheap BP gopher and 2 innings later Jess Flores gave the Giants yet another one.  Final score: 5-3.

When the Cubs lose the pennant by 1 game (or even by 10 games) we'll be able to look back on our impressive portfolio of games just like this one, where both batting and pitching chokes came together so beautifully.

Alan
