Subject: Reds @ Giants
Cincy's luck returns to normal and the Giants get up off the mat and split with the Reds.... Game 1: Lynn McGlothen entered the game with an ERA around 11.00, but on this day he held the Reds to 1 run in 7 innings in San Fran's 4-1 victory. Mike LaCoss left with only a 2-1 deficit, but two Cincy relievers ensured that the game would not end as close as that. Game 2: Tom Seaver and Joe Sambito have apparently switched identities this season; Seaver was once again mediocre and blew a 2-0 lead in the sixth with his usual gopher-friendly pitching, but Sambito tossed 3 near-perfect innings for his 5th save of 1980. Final score: 6-3 as the Reds, inspired by Sambito's effort, made a strong showing against the San Francisco bullpen. Veteran benchwarmer Cesar Geronimo led the way with 2 hits & 3 RBI. Game 3: Frank Pastore limited the Giants to 4 hits while fanning 10 in his complete-game 3-1 win. Game 4: George Foster got SFN started the right way, sabotaging Milt Wilcox by blowing 2 runs' worth of x-plays on consecutive batters in the first inning. Would those runs be important? Final score: 4-3, as the Reds could buy neither a clutch hit nor a decent split card. Cincy nearly mounted a comeback against Bob Knepper, but had the tying run gunned down at the plate in the 8th.
