Subject: 1979 World Series
After a brief delay the 1979 World Series finally got under
way this week and Boston defeated Cincinnati 4 games to 1 to become the first
team in SMILEY (there have been 2 in PreSMILEY) to
win back-to-back titles. They also became the first team to appear in three
straight World Series. Both teams were playing in their fourth series, 3 times
against each other. Game 1: Tom Seaver vs JR Richard promised to be a low scoring affair and the
two did not disappoint. Tom Seaver allowed just 5
hits in 7 innings and left to a pinch hitter with a 0-0 score. JR was just a
little bit better, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 11 in the complete
game win. Jim Rice sent the Sox faithful home happy, launching a 3 run homer in
the 8th to provide the only offense as Boston won 3-0. Game 2: Boston got runs in
the first and fifth and Dennis Eckersley worked in
and out of trouble for 6 scoreless innings. Cincinnati finally got
on the board in the 7th, thanks to a 2 run homer by Ken Griffey. Lee Mays’ pinch homer in the 9th off
of Dick Drago put the Reds up 4-2. Dwight Evans hit a
solo shot with one out to pull the Sox within one. 3 straight singles tied the
game before the Reds bullpen was able to get the last 2 outs. In the 10th,
Carl Yastrzemski hit a 1 out single and scored when
Eric Soderholm doubled to give Boston a 5-4 win. Game 3: The scene shifted to Riverfront and the Reds took
awhile to find their bats at home. Eric Rasmussen had a no hitter until the 6th
and went into the 9th with a shutout. Meanwhile, Boston had a 3 run
first and built it to a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th when
things got interesting. The first 5 Reds reached base before a sac fly recorded
the first out of the inning. Tom Burgmeier was able
to get Junior Kennedy to ground out before Dick Drago
got Charlie Spikes to fly to left on the first pitch he threw to end it with
another 5-4 Boston win. Game 4: Boston was looking
for their lucky 13th straight postseason win (last loss was game 4
of the 78 AL playoffs). JR
and Seaver matched up again although neither was as
sharp as game 1. JR struck out 10 in his second complete game but the Reds were
able to score 4 runs off him. Fred Lynn drove in both Boston runs, an rbi single in the 4th
and a solo hr in the 6th that tied the game at 2. Joe Strain drove
in the go ahead run in the 7th and the Reds added an insurance run
in the 8th to avoid the sweep 4-2. Game 5: In a game 2 rematch, Dennis Eckersley
and Dave Frost both pitched well. Boston managed a
run in the 4th when Ashby walked, Eckesley
bunted him to second and Remy drove him home with a single. With Eck on the mound, it
was a matter of when, not if, he would allow a homer. Ken Griffey
reached him again (same 6-4 roll) in the 8th to tie the game up. Stayed that way until the 13th inning. Series MVP
Fred Lynn led off with a single but was erased on a double play. Carl Yastremski then launched a solo homer deep into the right
field seats to give the Sox a 2-1 lead. Burgmeier
allowed a leadoff walk but got Griffey to hit into a
double play to end the season. Both in 78 and 79 Boston won the
clinching game in extra innings, needing 12 to win game 4 against Pittsburgh last year. |
