Game 1 Ivan Dejesus had 2 base hits as the Montreal Expos topped the New York NL Mets by a score of 2 to 0 at Shea Stadium.
Montreal came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Dejesus led off the inning for Montreal when he hit a single. Ron Leflore next to the plate and he delivered a single. Leflore was safe at second on a stolen base. Jerry White stepped in and he laced a base-knock plating two runs. Montreal had 7 hits overall, while New York NL had 4.
Bill Gullickson (2-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 7 innings. Woodie Fryman gained credit for his 6th save. Jeff Reardon (0-2) was the loser in relief.
Game 2 The Montreal Expos toppled the New York NL Mets by a 9 to 5 score at Shea Stadium.
Montreal took the lead for keeps in the top of the 2nd inning when they tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. Montreal finished with 15 hits while New York NL ended up with 7.
Ed Whitson (2-1) allowed 4 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Woodie Fryman recorded the save, his 7th. The loss was charged to Steve Carlton (1-4). He allowed 12 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
Game 3 At Shea Stadium the New York NL Mets were battered 13 to 7 by the Montreal Expos.
Montreal went ahead for good in the 2nd inning scoring one runner. After two outs Manny Trillo lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 2nd of the season). Montreal won despite being out-hit by New York NL 14 hits to 11.
Scott Sanderson (2-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 and 2/3 innings and allowing 2 runs. Pete Redfern recorded his 1st save. Pat Zachry (2-1) was given the loss. He was knocked around by Montreal , allowing 5 hits and 4 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.
Game 4 Tommy Boggs came through with a solid 6 innings and Johnny Bench went deep and had 2 RBI as the New York NL Mets defeated the Montreal Expos by the score of 6 to 4 at Shea Stadium.
New York NL came up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning with the help of 4 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Bench who made the crowd come alive when he cracked a two-run shot (his 7th of the season). Montreal had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.
Boggs (1-1) got the win allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Sparky Lyle got the save, his 2nd. Steve Rogers (2-1) took the loss. He surrendered 5 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings.
Jon Fellows was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back. Now maybe we can relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we are capable.'
