Subject: Cubs @ Reds

The Reds are struggling this year but they sure do play the Cubs tough; Chicago took 2 out of 3 and should have swept but it was a fight the whole way, even when we had a starter tossing a 1-hitter....

Game 1: Johnnies Schmitz & Vander Meer hooked up in a duel that was scoreless though the Cubs had runners galore -- and went 1 for 9 with runners on base until Peanuts Lowrey broke the deadlock with a 2-run homer in the 6th.  Two batters later Marty Marion greeted reliever Sheldon Jones with an RBI single and it was a good thing for the Cubs that he did, as we choked back 2 unearned runs in the final innings to turn a 3-run lead into a nailbiter.  Final score: 3-2.

A rare botched x-play by Marion gave the Reds their first run, and a passed ball in the 9th contributed to the other.  Ridiculously underachieving closer Emil Kush got the save and lowered his ERA to a paltry 6.66 in the process.  Aside from typical rotten luck most of the time, Kush is main reason why the meager CHN winning percentage is way out of line with the team's other stats.

===============================================

Game 2: Dr. HAL really stuck it to the Cubs today, as Murry Dickson was surgically dismembered and reliever Paul Erickson barely made it to the operating table before he too died.

The ever so gracious Cubs simply refused to take advantage of our plethora of opportunities (or draw a decent split card), turning *5* Cincy errors into just 2 unearned runs (while ONE error of our own had the same impact), LOBbed 14 (and had 2 critical GIDPs) and choked it away by the score of 10-8, letting the Reds score 6 of the final 7 runs of the contest.

===============================================

Game 3: Chicago again had baserunners all over the place (17), amounting mostly to a bunch of LOB again.  But it didn't matter because Hank Wyse, whose card isn't exactly devoid of hits, continues to pitch very well though his won-loss record isn't impressive (go figure).  The only hit Wyse allowed today in 9 innings was a single to Howie Schultz in the 6th.  Final score: 6-0.

CIN starter Buddy Lively pitched remarkably well (6 IP, 3 hits, 2 runs) but his wildness gave the Cubs 2 runs in the 3rd without even one hit (4 walks + a sac fly).  In typical Cub fashion the game remained close despite Wyse's mastery, then Jim Russell provided some breathing room at last with a 2-run homer in the 7th, and 5 singles in the 8th resulted in 2 more runs, 2 more LOB and a narrowly-missed triple play by the Reds.
